Teaching Goals

Knowledge objects:

a. master the following words: creative, performer, talent, common, all kinds of, role, winner, prize, everybody, make up, seriously.

b. master the sentence structure:

1 Who was the best performer

2 It’s + adj. +for sb.+to do sth.

3 All these shows have one thing in common.

4 That’s up to you to decide.

5 But if you don’t take these shows too seriously.

6 They usually play a role in deciding the winner.

Ability objects:

1. master some basic reading skills like skim, can or predict.

2. can read the passage fluently.

Moral objects

Know something about the talent show and treat singers or movie stars rationally. Don’t worship stars blindly.

Teaching Procedure

Step 1 Warming- up

The teacher plays a short video about China’s Got Talent.

T: Have you ever watched China’s Got Talent? Then introduce it briefly to the students.

Step 2 present teaching goals

Step 3 Presentation

1. Present some pictures about reality shows such as Running Man; the Voice of China. And tell them nowadays, talent shows are getting more and more popular.

2. Ask them to think about what kind of people can be called talent people? Then lead in the topic Who’s Got Talent?

Step 4 Pre-reading

TThere are three talent shows mentioned in the passage. They’re in para.1. now, you have 10 seconds to find the answer.

Ss: American Idol, America’s Got Talent, China’s Got Talent.

T: before reading, let’s predict the passage based on the five T/F questions.

1. Talent shows are getting less and less popular. ( )

2. It’s always boring to watch other people show their talents. ( )

3. Everybody enjoys watching these shows. ( )

4. The winner can always gets a very good prize. ( )

5. If you take these shows too seriously, they are fun to watch. ( )

Check the answers with the class and ask them to correct the mistakes.

Step 5 While-reading (2c) (pair work)

1. Now, let’s work on 2c. First, let’s read the questions and make sure we know the meaning of all questions. Then read the passage again and find the answers to the questions.

2. Four students a group and discuss the five questions together.

3. Check the answers with the class.

Step 6 Post-reading

Now, let’s read the passage again and fill in the blanks using the information in the passage.

Talent shows are getting more and more popular, there are shows like American Idol, America’s Got Talent and China’s Got Talent. They have one thing__________. They look for__________, the _________, the _________ and so on. When people watch the show, they usually ________in deciding the winner. And the winner always gets a good________. However, not______ enjoys these shows. Some think that the lives of the performers are ______. And one great thing about them is that they give people a way to make their dream___________.

What we have learned this lesson? Encourage them to summarize the language points.( we learned some basic information about talent shows, and some useful reading skills such as skim, scan and predict)

Step 9 Reflection

This is a reading lesson, I mainly want to train students’ reading ability by designing pre-reading, while-reading and post-reading activities, first, I play a short video and present some pictures to lead in the topic, students show a big interests in this lesson and they can study in a relaxing atmosphere. However, most students are poor in English and they can’t read a complete passage, so improve their reading ability is necessary, I will encourage them to open their mouth to speak English as much as possible.
