Dear Peter,

Thanks for inviting me to your Chinese Calligraphy exhibition. I truly appreciate all your devotion and achievement, which will surely contribute to the spread of Chinese culture.

However, it’s a great pity that I can’t attend it that day for I have an important exam to take. I have been making preparations for it for a long time, and I really can’t afford to fail. The exam will determine whether I can be admitted to a graduate program or not. I’m sure you can understand my situation.

Wish your exhibition a great success!

Yours,

Li Hua

第一节

Text 1

W: David, have you ever sung in public?

M: To be honest, I dare not open my mouth before my friends, let alone sing in public.

Text 2

M: The cashier gave me the wrong change. I gave her 10 dollars to pay for a 5-dollar book, and she only gave me 2 dollars back.

W: Why didn’t you count the change?

Text 3

M: Sorry ma’am, can you wait five more minutes? We should have a table soon.

W: Five more minutes? But I’ve already waited for half an hour. Forget it!

Text 4

M: Amanda, I’m terribly sorry I was absent from your birthday party because I was ill.

W: I wouldn’t buy it. Someone saw you playing basketball. You just didn’t want to come.

M: (Embarrassed) All right. All right. I am sorry.

Text 5

W: Don’t be absent-minded when you’re behind the wheel. It’s dangerous.

M: It’s because I didn’t sleep well last night.

W: You’d better stop the car and have a rest.

第二节

Text 6

M: Hello, Judy. Where are you heading?

W: Hi, Tom. I am going home.

M: Where do you live? Is it far away?

W: No, I live at Fuzhou Road. It is somewhere around the shopping center.

M: If you walk home, it will take you at least 25 minutes. I am going that way. Shall I give you a ride?

W: Great! I am just thinking of taking a bus. Actually, I prefer to walk home from work for better health. But today I am taking a heavy bag, so thank you very much. It couldn’t be better.

M: You’re welcome.

Text 7

W: Can I help you?

M: I want to find an old magazine, but I’m not sure where I can find it.

W: How old is it? Is it less than a year old, or older? The magazines less than a year

are in the reading room on the second floor. But the older ones are put together and stored

on the third floor.

M: Well, I want to find one that is more than a year old. So I need to go to the second floor, right?

W: No, no. You should go to the third floor.

M: Oh. Thanks for your help.

Text 8

W: Hi Simon. It’s Alice.

M: Hi there Alice. It’s you! How are things going in your new company?

W: Not too bad. Listen, there is a new film called Wonder at the New State Cinema. I’ve heard it’s really good. Would you like to go to the cinema to see it with me tomorrow? We haven’t met for a while.

M: Wow! I know the film and I’ve read some reviews about it. It’s fantastic! But, uh, tomorrow is Thursday. I’m afraid it isn’t good for me. I’m having dinner with my family. It’s my mother’s birthday.

W: OK. Can you make it on Friday?

M: Err, yeah, Friday sounds fine. What time do you want to meet?

W: Well, the film begins at 8:30. Let’s meet at the cinema 10 minutes ahead.

M: Fine. See you on Friday.

Text 9

W: Hi, Chen, do you have a minute to talk?

M: Sure, what’s up

W: I noticed something in our meeting just now. As a friend, I think I should tell you about it.

It has something to do with manners. I mean, body language, especially eye contact.

M: Body language? Amy, can you be more specific? Western manners are new to me.

W: You know, besides words, we send messages with our arms, our gestures and most often with

our eyes.

M: So you are saying that you can read my mind through eye contact?

W: Exactly. While Todd was giving his presentation, I could tell you had a different idea.

M: Oh, really? I didn’t say anything, but you saw me through.

W: You rolled your eyes and looked away several times while Todd was speaking. By not looking

at Todd, you gave the impression that you were not interested in hearing more. When you lost

complete interest in what Todd was saying, you just stared at him blankly.

M: You mean while I was looking at Todd, others still could tell I wasn’t listening?

W: That’s right. Learning to control the message that your eyes send is the key to respectful communication.

M: I am very sorry for my bad manners. Thanks. I’ve really learned a lot.

Text 10

I am a model and actress, proud of my scars.

In 2012 I got into a really bad burn accident. I put hot soup and vegetables in a cooker. And the cooker exploded. So I got up to third-degree burns. It was a very tough time for me, because it wasn’t until I got burnt that I realized how much of my identity I put in my looks.

When it comes to my role models, I admire Turia Pitt most. She is a lady who did this marathon and got caught in a bush fire. And despite her looks on the outside after being burned, she was on all these different magazine covers and inspiring women of all ages. That is awesome.

My attitude towards beauty is that beauty comes from within. If you have a beautiful soul, and you do good things, and you practice good virtues, your beauty will shine. It doesn’t matter what you look like on the outside.
