WutheringHeightsisastoryofloveandrevenge;Itistoldintheformofanextendedflashback.Thestorytakespalceintheearly1800sinNorthernEngland.Afteravisittohisstrangelandlord,anewcomertotheareadesirestoknowthehistoryofthefamily--whichhereceivesfromNellyDeans,aservantwhointroducesustotheEarnshawfamilywhoonceresidedinthehouseknownasWutheringHeights.Itwasonceacheerfulplace,butOldEarnshawadopteda"Gipsy"childwhohenamedHeathcliff.AndCatherine,daughterofthehouse,regardedhimastheperfectcompanion:wild,rude,andasproudandcruelasshe.ButalthoughCatherineloveshim,evenrecognizeshimashersoulmate,shecannotlower
herselftomarrysofarbelowhersocialstation.Sheinsteadmarriesanother,andinsodoingsetsinmotionanobsessionthatwilldestroythemall.
WutheringHeightsexploresthephilosophyofhumanity.Thecharactersinthenovelarefullofboldness,wildnessandpassionwhichisthehumannatureandinstinctthatfreefromtherestrictofsocialcivilization.Inthisnovel,passionisthekeytobringthereadersintothestory,itdoesnotmatterofgoodandevil,beautyandugliness,it’sarealexistenceforustoexperienceandthink.
WutheringHeightsisastoryoflove,butitisdifferentwithotherlovestory.Duringthewholenovel,thefemaleleadingrole--Catherinerarelyuse"love"todescribetherelationshipbetweenherandthemaleleadingrole--Heathcliff.ButInthatnightshedecidedpersonallythetragicfateofherandHeathcliff,shesaid‘mygreatmiseriesinthisworldhavebeenHeathcliff’smiseries,andIwatchedandfelteachfromthebeginning:mygreatthoughtinlivingishimself.Ifallelseperished,andheremained,Ishouldstillcontinuetobe;andifallelseremained,andhewasannihilated,theuniversewouldturntoamightystranger:Ishouldnotseemapartofit……IamHeathcliff!He’salways,alwaysinmymind:notasapleasure,anymorethanIisalwaysapleasuretome,butasmyownbeing.’ThisistherealsoulofCatherine,sheloveHeathcliff,butshecan’tmarrywithhimbecauseofherselfishandthepretentiousfeature.ThisistheparadoxoflovewhichleadstothetragicendforCatherineandHeathcliff.
WutheringHeightsisastoryofrevenge.AfterknowingthedecisionwhatCatherinemade,Heathclifflefther,leftWutheringHeights.Buthecamebackafterseveralyears,andretaliatedCatherineandallthepeoplewhohadjeeredandabusedhimbefore.WhenCatherinewasgoingtodie,hewasextremelycruelanddidnotgivehertendernessandconsolation,butsaidtoher‘youteachmehowcruelyou’vebeen-cruelandfalse.
TheendofthenovelwasthatHeathcliffcommittedsuicide,hisdeathisadiefortheirlove,andexpresshisundyongloveforCatherine.Beforehedied,hegaveuptherevengeofthenextgeneration.Thisreflectsthathehasagoodnature,butbecauseofthecruelrealityheloseshisnature.Therecoveryofhumanityisaspiritualsublimationandreflectsthehumanitarianideals.
WutheringHeightsisastunningnovel;frightening,inexorable,unsettling,filledwith
unbridledpassionthatmakesonecringe.Evenifyoudonotlikeit,youshouldreaditatleastonce--andthosewhodolikeitwillreturntoitagainandagain
