I’m honored to be a judge for the English Speech Competition. As a judge and college teacher, I’d like to share with you some tips on how to be successful in the competition, which I hope will help in preparing for the competition.

First, it’s better to use familiar words. Many competitors hold the belief that complicated words sound impressive. In fact they usually destroy understanding. Also, learning when and how to pause is not only a major challenge, but also important as one gains more confidence during these moments of silence. One thing I want to mention is that during these pauses, do not fill the silence with uh”“er or um”.They are annoying.Next, remember to strike the right balance between good pronunciation and fluency.Pronunciation is more important.Remember, personal appearance plays an important role in making a speech.Judges always see the competitors before they begin to speak. My main advice is simple:be yourself. My last advice to you is that practice makes perfect.

In conclusion, I wish every one of you success in the competition.

18.When does the speech take place?

A.Before the speech competition.

B.After the speech competition.

C.During the speech competition.

A

19.What is the speaker?

A.A judge and organizer.

B.A college teacher and judge.

C.A college teacher and competitor.

B

20.What is many competitors’ wrong belief?

A.Familiar words destroy understanding.

B.Complicated words destroy understanding.

C.Complicated words sound impressive.

No one knows why we sleep, but it’s certain that we need to.People who are prevented from sleeping begin to suffer obvious effects after a few daysthey think less clearly, and they fall asleep during the working hours; some may have hallucinations(幻觉).

There are no rules about sleep.Generally speaking, grown-ups sleep about seven and a half hours each night and probably more than sixty percent get between seven and eight hours. But perhaps eight percent are quite happy with five hours or less, and four percent or so find that they want ten hours or more.If you feel all right, you’re probably getting enough sleep. The important thing is not to worry how much other people gettheir needs may be different.Exercise doesn’t seem to increase the need for sleepoffice workers, for example, sleep for about as long as people doing physically active work.

Children sleep more than grown-upsperhaps fourteen to eighteen hours soon after birth, going down to grown-up levels by early teenage.Sleep patterns also tend to be different in the elderly, who may sleep less at night than they did when younger, find sleep getting more broken, and often make it a rule to sleep during the daytime.

21.According to the passage, some people are unable to think clearly because .

Many animals recognize their food because they see it.So do humans. When you see an apple or a piece of chocolate, you know that these are things you can eat.You can also use other senses when you choose your food. You may like it because it smells good or because it tastes good. You may dislike some types of food because they do not look, smell or taste very nice.Different animals use different senses to find and choose their food.A few animals depend on only one of their senses, while most animals use more than one sense.

Although there are many different types of food, some animals spend their lives eating only one type. The panda eats only one particular type of bamboo.Other animals eat only one type of food even when given the choice.A kind of white butterfly will stay on the leaves of a cabbage, even though there are plenty of other vegetables in the garden. However, most animals have a more varied(多样的) diet. The bear eats fruits, honey(蜂蜜) and fish. The fox eats small animals, birds and fruits. The diet of these animals will be different depending on the season.

Humans have a very varied diet.We often eat food because we like it and not because it is good for us.In countries such as France and Britain, people eat food with too much sugar. This makes them overweight, which is bad for their health.Eating too much red meat and animal products, such as butter, can also be bad for the health.Choosing the right food, therefore, has become an area of study in modern life.

Ever think you might have an adopted twin somewhere? It’s a fairly common childhood fantasy.

But for two little girls adopted from China two years ago, the fantasy turned out to be true.

Their new moms, who live in Illinois and Florida, met on an Internet site for parents who have adopted children in China. When they realized that their daughters, now 3, had come from the same orphanage, they began comparing photos and other information. That led to genetic tests that confirmed their suspicion:the girls are twins.

What’s more, both were named Mia by their new parents.

It’s a miracle, said Holly Funk, one of the moms.“In the sea of humanity, these kids found each other.”

The girls had been abandoned on a sidewalk in Yangzhou about a week apart. When they were reunited in Illinois two weeks ago, they shyly eyed each other, and then reached for the other’s hand.

The two families plan on lots of visits in the coming years.

About 120,000 kids are adopted in the United States each year.Nearly 8,000 Chinese children were adopted by Americans in 2005, according to US officials.

TheDietZone:ADangerousPlace

Diet Coke, diet Pepsi, diet pills, no-fat diet, vegetable diet...We are surrounded by the word diet everywhere we look and listen. We have so easily been attracted by the promise and potential of diet products that we have stopped thinking about what diet products are doing to us.We are paying for products that harm us psychologically and physically.

Diet products significantly weaken us psychologically. On one level, we are not allowing our brains to admit that our weight problems lie not in actually losing weight, but in controlling the consumption of fatty, high-calorie, unhealthy foods.Diet products allow us to jump over the thinking stage and go straight for the scale(秤) instead. All we have to do is to swallow or recognize the word diet in food labels.

On another level, diet products have greater psychological effects.Every time we have a zero-calorie drink, we are telling ourselves without our awareness that we don’t have to work to get results.Diet products make people believe that gain comes without pain, and that life can be without resistance and struggle.

The danger of diet products lies not only in the psychological effects they have on us, but also in the physical harm that they cause.Diet foods can indirectly harm our bodies because consuming them instead of healthy foods means we are preventing our bodies from having basic nutrients(营养成分).Diet foods and diet pills contain zero-calorie only because the diet industry has created chemicals to produce these wonder products.Diet products may not be nutritional, and the chemicals that go into diet products are potentially dangerous.

Now that we are aware of the effects that diet products have on us, it is time to seriously think about buying them.Losing weight lies in the power of minds, not in the power of chemicals.Once we realize this, we will be much better able to resist diet products, and therefore prevent the psychological and physical harm that comes from using them.

33.From Paragraph 1, we learn that .

A.diet products fail to bring out people’s potential

B.people have difficulty in choosing diet products

C.diet products are misleading people

D.people are fed up with diet products

根据第一段的Wearepayingforproductsthatharmuspsychologicallyandphysically.”可知,我们正为对我们造成身体上和心理上的伤害的食品买单。

C

34.In Paragraph 3, gain comes without pain probably means .

A.losing weight is effortless

B.it costs a lot to lose weight

C.diet products bring no pain

D.diet products are free from calories

根据前文的“...wedon’thavetoworktogetresults.”可知选A项。gaincomeswithoutpain不劳而获

A

35.Diet products indirectly harm people physically because such products .

A.are over-consumed

B.lack basic nutrients

C.are short of chemicals

D.provide too much energy

根据第四段的第二句Dietfoodscanindirectlyharmourbodiesbecauseconsumingtheminsteadofhealthyfoodsmeanswearepreventingourbodiesfromhavingbasicnutrients.”可知选B项。

参考范文

FailureIstheMotherofSuccess

We middle school students have had many tests or exams. We have achieved success and suffered from failure.Faced with failure, different students take different attitudes towards it.

Some students take a positive attitude towards failure. They encourage themselves to be self-confident,trying to analyze and find out the causes so that they will not make similar mistakes again in future.Others, however, will be in low spirits once they don’t do well in the exams.Instead of studying as hard as before, they usually lose heart and give in.

I can’t agree more with those with positive attitudes. As we all know, failure is the mother of success.Even great people have failed many times before they succeed. It is advisable to seize on failure and turn it into a valuable lesson, which can benefit us greatly. So we must deal with our failure correctly.
