Just a few years out of law school, I decided that I wanted to write fictions. The only thing I had ever published before was a law-review article. I had made great efforts to write when I came home at night after work, but I was too tired. I decided to quit my job.

I began my new life on a February morning. I sat down at my kitchen table at 7:30 am and made a resolution. Every day I would write until lunchtime. Then I would lie down on the floor for 20 minutes to rest my mind. After that, I would return to work for a few more hours.

In my first year, I sold two stories. Then I wrote a novel, but I thought it wasn't good enough, so I ended up putting it in a drawer. My second novel, Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk, was published to glowing reviews and received the National Book Critics Circle Award for fiction.

My success sounds like a familiar story, but actually it was far from sudden. I quit my job, and for every story I published in those years, I had at least 30 rejections. The novel that I put away in the drawer took my four years. My breakthrough came in 2006, 18 years after I first sat down to write at my kitchen table.

Sometimes genius (天才) is just the thing that comes out after 20 years of working at your kitchen. Also, doing something truly creative requires the energy of youth. Orson Welles made his masterpiece, Citizen Kan, at 25. T. S. Eliot wrote The Love Song of J. Afred Prufrock at 23.

1When did the author decide to devote himself to writing fictions?

A. When he was tired from his work.                  B. Straight after graduation from law school.

C. On being informed his law-review article came out.         D. When his hobby was disturbed by his work.

2We can infer from the second paragraph that the author       .

A. led a wealthy life                                              B. arranged his life reasonably

C. was too diligent to relax himself                     D. remained single

3What does the author mainly intend to tell us in this passage?

A. Failure is the mother of success.                     B. A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.

C. It is never too old to learn.                              D. It is the first step that costs troublesome.

4Why did the author give the example of Orson Welles and T. S. Eliot?

A. To make a comparison between them and himself.         B. To show creativity needs energy and efforts.

C. To persuade the readers of their great talents.         D. To recommend their two masterpieces.

On a recent trip to the island of Newfoundland, Canada, my husband asked our talkative cab driver what made him most proud to be from there.

"Our generosity and hospitality (好客)," he replied in a strong local accent. "Your car breaks down in the middle of nowhere, someone will stop to help. People here are kind like that."

His answer lingered in my mind during that ride with my husband and teenage kids, as we headed out to explore on the first day of our vacation.

Little did I know we were about to experience some of that remarkable Newfoundland kindness for ourselves.

We met Alma that same morning at the start of a long hike.

Our teenagers hurried ahead, and as we walked behind, admiring the scenery, two women in sunglasses and summer hiking gear stopped.

They'd heard us discussing different routes, then asked if we'd like suggestions.

They looked to be in their 40s, and were both enthusiastic to share their local expertise.

We listened eagerly, taking mental notes, until one of the women asked, "You have a car, right?"

I explained that there were no cars available during our week on the island, so we had to rely on cabs instead.

"Oh no," she said, "you need a car." And then, as casually as if offering a piece of chewing gum (口香糖), she said: "Take mine!"

Dumbfounded, my husband and I just smiled in disbelief.

"Why not?" She insisted. "You need a car to get to know all these places."

"But you don't even know us," I said.

"That doesn't matter," she continued with absolute determination.

Stunned, I looked over at her friend, who shrugged and said, "That's Alma."

Forty minutes of talking later, my family climbed into Alma's car.

We spent the rest of our vacation discovering different areas of this beautiful island.

But it wasn't the groups of whales we saw, or the vast areas of woodland, that made this place so memorable.

Instead, it was the act of kindness from a complete stranger that made us realize how special Newfoundland really was.

Next year, there's no doubt where we'll be taking our summer vacation. Who knows what act of kindness we'll meet then?

1What problem did the author's family have in Newfoundland?

A.They couldn't understand the local accent.

B.Their car broke down on the first day.

C.They got lost during a hike.

D.They didn't have a car.

2The underlined word "dumbfounded" in Paragraph 12 is closest in meaning to ______.

A.shocked

B.satisfied

D.embarrassed

3What impressed the author most during her stay in Newfoundland?

A.The talkative cab driver.

B.The whales swimming.

C.The beautiful scenery of the island.

D.The help from an enthusiastic stranger.

4What can we infer about the author from the last paragraph?

A.She is looking forward to meeting Alma once more.

B.She expects to visit Newfoundland again.

C.She hasn't decided where to go next year.

D.She also wants to be kind to others during vacation.

根据第三段“Air pollution in Indians capital surged to its worst levels in years, covering the city in a thick smog that has become an annual public-health emergency despite government vows to solve the problem.”印度首都的空气污染飙升至多年来最严重的水平,笼罩着这座城市的浓雾已成为年度公共卫生紧急事件,尽管政府誓言要解决这个问题;第五段“New Delhi, is engulfed each year as the weather cools and a thick haze builds up from the pollutants emitted from cars and coal-based power plants, swirling dust ..., leaving Delhi the world's most polluted city.” 庆祝印度排灯节的烟花爆竹随后到达,使德里现在成为世界上污染最严重的城市;以及第四段中的“Millions of antipollution masks were distributed at schools, colleges, hospitals and markets.”

根据第四段“Hundreds of flights were diverted, delayed and canceled over the weekend due to poor visibility, schools and offices were closed Monday and officials rushed to take emergency measures to try to reverse the eroding air quality. Millions of antipollution masks were distributed at schools, colleges, hospitals and markets.”

根据第五段中的“New Delhi, is engulfed each year as the weather cools and a thick haze builds up from the pollutants emitted from cars and coal-based power plants, swirling dust from construction sites and roads and smoke from crop stubble burning in neighboring states.” 故选A

WISH YOU WERE MORE CREATIVE?

I want to ask you a favor. I have a pair of pants. Tell me: How many different ways can I put a pair of pants to use? Now imagine you're an architect. Same question. Now imagine you're Bill Gates. A scuba diver. A medieval knight. You still have the pants. What alternative uses come to mind?

What you just practiced--the conscious act of "wearing" another self-is an exercise that, according to psychiatrist SriniPillay, MD, is essential to being creative.

One great irony (讽刺) about our collective addiction to creativity is that we tend to frame it in uncreative ways. That is to say, most of us marry creativity to our concept of self: Either we're "creative" or we aren't, without much of a middle ground. "I'm just not a creative person!" a discouraged student might say in art class, while another might blame her talent at painting for her difficulties in math, making a comment "I'm very right-brained."

Dr.Pillay, an assistant professor at Harvard University, has spent years overturning these ideas. He believes that the key to unlocking your creative potential is to challenge the stereotyped (陈词滥调的) advice that urges you to "believe in yourself." In fact, you should do the opposite: Believe you are someone else.

He points to a study showing the impact of stereotype on one's behavior. The authors, psychologists Denis Dumas and Kevin Dunbar, divided their college student subjects into two groups, instructing one group to think of themselves as "eccentric poets" and the other to imagine they were "rigid librarians". The researchers then presented them all with ordinary objects, including a fork, a carrot, and a pair of pants, and asked them to come up with as many different uses as possible for each one. The former group came up with the widest range of ideas, whereas the latter had the fewest.

These results suggest that creativity is not an individual characteristic but a "product of context and perspective". Everyone can be creative, as long as he or she feels like a creative person.

Dr. Pillay's work takes this a step further: He argues that simply identifying yourself as creative is less powerful than taking the brave, creative step of imagining you are somebody else. This exercise, which he calls psychological Halloweenism, refers to the conscious action of "wearing" another self. An actor may employ this technique to get into character, but anyone can use it. According to Dr. Pillay, it works because it is an act of conscious unfocus, a collection of brain regions that spring into action when you're not focused on a specific task or thought. Most people spend nearly half of their days in a state of "unfocus." This doesn't make us lazy; it makes us human.

Imagining yourself in a new situation, or an entirely new identity, never felt so productive. You're making yourself more creative, and you're giving yourself permission to do something you'd otherwise feel guilty about.

1What's the function of the questions in paragraph 1?

A. To lead in the topic.                                         B. To make a comparison.

C. To state an opinion.                                         D. To ask a favor.

2The study led by Denis Dumas and Kevin Dunbar proves

A. creativity is an individual characteristic          B. librarians are more creative than poets

C. ordinary objects can improve creativity         D. your creativity is determined by yourself

3According to Dr. Pillay, Halloweenism works because       .

A. it is an act of unconscious focus                     B. certain brain areas begin to act together

C. people are in a state of laziness                      D. all actors employ this technique

4If you want to be more creative, you are supposed to     .

A. focus on a specific task                                    B. believe in your own talent

C. pretend to be someone else                           D. turn to be right-brained

What you just practiced--the conscious act of "wearing" another self--is an exercise that…is essential to being creative.“可知作者接着说刚才你所练习的有意识地"穿戴"另一个自我的行为是一种对保持创造力至关重要的练习。

These results suggest that creativity is not an individual characteristic but a‘product of context and perspective’. Everyone can be creative, as long as he or she feels like a creative person.“可知Denis Dumas Kevin Dunbar的研究结果表明创造力不是个体特征,而是"环境和视角的产物"。

According to Dr. Pillay, it works because it is an act of conscious unfocus, a collection of brain regions that spring into action when you're not focused on a specific task or thought.“可知据皮莱博士说,心理万圣节之所以有效,是因为它是一种有意识的分散注意力的行为,当你不专注于某一特定任务或思想时,大脑中一系列区域就起作用。

He believes that the key to unlocking your creative potential is to challenge the stereotyped (陈词滥调的) advice that urges you to ‘believe in yourself.’ In fact, you should do the opposite: Believe you are someone else.“可知想象自己处在一个新的环境中,或者是一个全新的身份,你会感到从未有过的高效,你让自己更有创造力。

Watching wooden dolls come to life may not be one of the most popular forms of entertainment today, but with over twenty years' experience, talented puppeteer (木偶表演者) Peter Roberts has earned himself the title “master puppeteer” because of his great ability to turn puppets into believable, almost living characters. “People are quite often surprised to hear what I do for living and have little appreciation of puppy as a form of entertainment. But while the exact origins of puppet theatre are unknown, it has been popular in many cultures and may have been the very first kind of theatre,” he explains.

Roberts' shows are highly original. “A puppet show can involve anything from clowning(傻逗) to storytelling,” he says, Equally diverse are the audiences he performs for. “Some are attracted by the puppets themselves, while others enjoy the dialogue.” Roberts believes that this form of entertainment can be appreciated by people of all ages and cultures.

Roberts' interest in puppets started when he received some beautiful glove puppets one Christmas. He started putting on shows with these for family and friends and then moved on to handmade Chinese string puppets. Learning mostly from books and personal experience, he explains, “I was already spending most of my free time carving puppets and putting on shows, so I hardly noticed the change from students to full-time professional puppeteer.”

The puppets are designed specifically for each show, which is extremely time consuming. According to Roberts, “Sometimes what you expect and what you actually create in the end are two very different things. I've made some of my best puppets 'accidentally'.”

When most people hear the word “puppetry”, they more than likely think of a way of keeping children entertained at birthday parties. Certainly the subject matter will be expected to be light-hearted rather than serious. However, Roberts wants to point out that puppets come serious messages sometimes.” he says.

1What do we know about puppetry in the first paragraph?

A. It is a most popular form of entertainment.         B. It cannot give people pleasure any more.

C. It was first brought to life by Peter Roberts.         D. Its value as an art form is not fully recognized.

2In Roberts' eyes, his puppet shows           .

A. usually attract people full of humor               B. are most something for old aged audience

C. display something meaningful for different people         D. involve hard work and great intelligence

3Roberts developed an interest in puppets because of       .

A. the puppet show books                                   B. his university major

C. a Christmas gift                                                D. some Chinese string puppets

4What does Roberts want people to think of puppet theatre?

A. It is just a kind of entertainment for kids.         B. It can be educational as well as entertaining.

C. It is only a kind of serious art form.                D. It should be kept light-hearted.

根据第一段“People are quite often surprised to hear what I do for living and have little appreciation of puppy as a form of entertainment”可知,人们很少把木偶表演看作是一种娱乐形式来欣赏。

根据最后一段最后两句“Certainly the subject matter will be expected to be light-hearted rather than serious. However, Roberts wants to point out that puppets come serious messages sometimes.”

根据第三段第一句“Roberts' interest in puppets started when he received some beautiful glove puppets one Christmas.”

Feelings often run high where insects are concerned, with many people even sick when seeing them, let alone touch or swallow them. And yet insects present a huge nutritional opportunity as an increasing global population seeks more sources of food and feed.

Insects have generally high levels of animal protein and key micronutrients with lower environmental footprints than traditional alternatives, and they can be raised on leftovers. But cultural, social and economic problems remain, reports an article published today in Nutrition Bulletin.

“Insects present a nutritional opportunity, but it is unclear how their nutritional quality is influenced by what they are fed,” says Darja Dobermann, a researcher at the University of Nottingham. “In ideal conditions, insects have a smaller environmental impact than most traditional western forms of animal protein; less known is how to raise insect production while maintaining these environmental benefits.”

“Studies overall show that insects could make valuable economic and nutritional contributions to the food or fed systems, but there are no clear regulations in place to bring insects into such supply systems without them turning into a more expensive version of poultry(家禽)for food,” says Dobermann.

The article highlights how insects have been a source of food for hundreds of years in more than 100 countries with over 2,000 species that can be eaten; in central Africa, up to 50% of dietary protein has come from insects, with their market value higher than many alternative sources of animal protein.

Insects need to be large enough to make the effort of catching them worthwhile and easy to locate, preferably in predictably large quantities. They are consumed at various life stages, as raw, fried, boiled, roasted or ground food.

1Which of the following is the advantage of raising insects for food?

A. It will offer people work opportunities.          B. It is environmentally friendly.

C. It will replace traditional food.                        D. It will result in less leftovers

2What can be inferred from Dobermann's words?

A. Raising insects for food has become popular.         B. Raising insects can't solve food problems.

C. More should be done to raise insects for food.         D. More money can be made by raising insects.

3What does the underlined word in paragraph 4 stand for?

A. Insects                    B. Regulations                    C. Feed systems                    D. Supply systems

4Which is the possible title of this passage?

A. How to Raise Insects                                        B. Raising Insects for Money

C. Insects Seem No Longer Ugly                         D. A New Source of Food

The Hunan Satellite TV(HNTV) show "Where are we going, Dad?" is a big hit. Many famous stars brought their children to a strange village alone, and they had to spend 72 hours with their children there. The program fully showed us a modern version of the "how to be a good father". As the young parents today are too busy to take care of their children, this new form of "Lost on the way" played by nanny Daddy and cute kids triggered(触发)a lot of people's emotional resonance(共鸣). Both the kids and their parents will find that their hearts are being drawn closer. But this kind of feeling has just proved that there is a big spiritual barrier between the modern parents and children.

The TV shows like "Children are hard to support!", "Where are we going, Dad?", "hot mom" and "cute kids" are becoming more and more popular. All of these show the new parents' confusion in children's education and the appeal for the balance between career and family.

In real life, on the one hand the young parents feel helpless because they are too busy to accompany their children under the pressures of work and life; on the other hand they continue to do so. The data collected by HNTV shows that nearly two-thirds of their audience are female, among whom 36% are aged from 25 to 34.We can imagine such a scene that one evening a young mother is watching the show with her young children, while her husband is still at work or trapped in socializing, or maybe is just playing computer games in the bedroom. The story of a child without the company of father is still going on. In fact, it is sometimes the same to mothers. In a modern family, it is often the old who take the responsibility of raising a child. The participation of mother in the children's education is also very low.

It is just this kind of confusion where the parents have gone in the modern family education, and where the parents will guide their children to go that "Where are we goingDad?" shows us. If a child wants to grow up healthily and safely into a modern citizen with independent personality and free spirit, it is very important for him or her to follow the parents who serve as their first teacher. Maybe this is the real reason why such kind of TV programs could get hot. The truth is that children will go where their parents go; and society will go where the children go.

1In raising a child in modern society, parents should ________.

A.play computer games with their children

B.keep their children at home to avoid socializing

C.balance well between family and career

D.break down the barrier between children and teachers

2Which of the following can be inferred in the passage?

A.Parents shouldn't entirely leave the education of children to the old.

B.36% of the audience of the program are female aged from 25-34.

C.The program shows us the confusion where the parents and children will go to play.

D.In a modern family it is often mothers who are responsible for raising a child.

3Which one is the best title of the passage?

A.Confusion Behind “Where are we going, dad?”

B.Modern Education is Important

C.Nanny Daddy and Cute Kids

D.New problems in Modern Children's Education

4What attitude towards modern family education does the author express in the second paragraph?

A.Proud.

B.Worried.

C.Optimistic.

D.Indifferent.

Here is a record of the discussion about AI (artificial intelligence) conducted by several scientists:

Scientist A: I would say that we are quite a long way off developing the AI, though I do think it will happen within the next thirty or forty years. We will probably remain in control of technology and it will help us solve many of the world's problems. However, no one really knows what will happen if machines become more intelligent than humans. They may help us, ignore us or destroy us. I tend to believe AI will have a positive influence on our future lives, but whether that is true will be partly up to us.

Scientist B: I have to admit that the potential consequences of creating something that can match or go beyond human intelligence frighten me. Even now, scientists are teaching computers how to learn on their own. At some point in the near future, their intelligence may well take off and develop at an ever-increasing speed. Human beings evolve biologically very slowly and we would be quickly substituted. In the short term, there is the danger that robots will take over millions of human jobs, creating a large underclass of unemployed people. This could mean large-scale poverty and social unrest. In the long term machines might decide the world would be better without humans.

Scientist C: I'm a member of the Campaign to Stop Killer Robots. Forget the movie image of a terrifying Terminator stamping on human skulls and think of what's happening right now: military machines like drones, gun turrets and sentry robots are already being used to kill with very little human input. The next step will be autonomous “murderbots” following orders but finally deciding who to kill on their own. It seems clear to me that this would be extremely dangerous for humans. We need to be very cautious indeed about what we ask machines to do.

1What is Scientist B worried about?

A. AI technology will destroy the earth.              B. Computers can't think by themselves.

C. Robots will take the place of humans.            D. Humans will be unhappy without machines.

2What does the underlined word “this” in the last paragraph refer to?

A. I launched the campaign to Stop Killer Robots.         B. We forget the movie image of a terrifying Terminator.

C. “Murderbots” can't decide by themselves.         D. “Murderbots” will be against humans' orders.

3Which statement is CORRECT according to the record?

A. Scientist A thinks AI technology will never develop.         B. The employment will be affected by AI technology in the future.

C. “Murderbots” will follow the orders of their manufacturers in the wars.         D. All the three scientists agree that AI technology will benefit human beings.

4Who agree(s) AI has more negative aspects than positive aspects?

A. Scientist A                 B. Scientist B                 C. Scientists B & C                 D. Scientists B & A

The number of giraffes is becoming smaller across Africa, according to the Giraffe Conservation Foundation. The total population has dropped by 40 percent in the last 15 years. Surprisingly, even scientists haven't given much attention to giraffes. We are learning more about their ecology, but what we know is still way behind what we know about other species. "It's a silent extinction," said Dr. Julian Hennessy, a wildlife scientist.

"The main reason for the smaller number of giraffes is their loss of living places," said Hennessy, "as an increasing part of land is used for farming. But hunting also has a big influence." You might wonder why hunters would focus on giraffes. First of all, once a giraffe is brought down, there is lots of meat with a small amount of effort. Besides, there is another thing encouraging the hunting. In Tanzania, Hennessy says, the latest word on the street is that eating giraffe meat could cure AIDS. Fresh giraffe heads and bones can be sold at prices of up to $140 per piece.

Another widespread misconception about giraffes is that they are everywhere. Look at kids' books which are full of giraffes. They are always in zoo collections. They can be seen easily, so you don't think we have to worry about them. But the truth is that they are in danger of extinction. There is a lack of right and true data.

Hennessy and other researchers are now pulling together the data needed to improve the situation of the entire giraffe species and all nine subspecies (亚种). The information will be used to change the giraffe's listing on the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List, which now lists the species as of "least concern" but two subspecies as "endangered". "It's a lot of work to gather the necessary information," Hennessy says. "And several other giraffe subspecies will be recommended for endangered listings next year or the year after." He hopes that the world will finally start to take notice of how endangered these beloved animals have become.

1By saying "It's a silent extinction", Hennessy tells us that ______.

A. giraffes are unpopular in Africa                      B. the giraffe is always silent in daily life

C. the ecology of Africa needs more attention         D. the extinction occurs without enough attention

2What has caused the high price of giraffe meat in Tanzania?

A. The country's custom.                                      B. The illegal international trade.

C. The cost of hunting a giraffe.                          D. The idea that it's a cure for AIDS.

3The misconception in Para. 3 can be corrected by ______.

A. preventing illegal hunting in Africa                B. rewriting kids' books about giraffes

C. providing reliable data about giraffes            D. spreading scientific knowledge of AIDS

4The final purpose of Hennessy's great effort is to ______.

A. collect more information about giraffes         B. raise public awareness of protecting giraffes

C. prove giraffes will disappear in the next few years         D. work with the International Union for Conservation of Nature

根据第三段中的“There is a lack of right and true data.”可知造成人们误解的原因是,缺乏正确真实的数据,再根据第四段中的“Hennessy and other researchers are now pulling together the data needed to improve the situation of the entire giraffe species and all nine subspecies (亚种).”

根据最后一段中的“He hopes that the world will finally start to take notice of how endangered these beloved animals have become.”

Even a small increase in light activity such as washing dishes, or walking around the house might help prevent an early death among older adults, researchers say.

"It is important for elderly people, who might not be able to do much moderate intensity(强度)activity, that just moving around and doing light intensity activity will have strong effects and is beneficial," said Ulf Ekelund, who led the research.

Published in the BMJ, the latest research was based on a review of eight studies involving a total of more than 36,000 people with an average age of almost 63 years. Participants were followed for five to six years; 2,149 deaths were recorded. All of the studies involved monitoring the physical activity of individuals who had activity trackers, and the studies did not rely on self-reporting, which, the experts noted, could be unreliable.

For each study participants were split into four equal-sized groups, based on the total amount of time spent actively, and the risk of death assessed, taking into account factors such as age, sex, body mass index, and socioeconomic status. This was then repeated for an amount of activity at different levels of intensity. The results were analyzed together to give an overview. The team found a greater amount of activity was linked to a lower risk of death. The results held for different intensities of activity. The team said the study supported the message "sit less and move more and more often".

However, the study had limitations. It only looked at the situation for middle age and older adults, most of whom lived in the US or Europe, and some of the effect could be due to those people with a higher risk of death being less likely to be related to physical activity. Physical activity levels also were only measured over one period of time.

Dr Gavin Sandercock, from the University of Essex, said the results suggested moving more brought bigger benefits than simply reducing the time of sitting, another factor measured in the study.

"This study reinforces the important message that getting the least active people to do even just a little bit more physical activity can have important public health benefits," he said.

1Which of the following may Ulf Ekelund suggest elderly people do?

A.lying on the sofa reading.

B.Doing a little gentle gardening.

C.Going out to hike with friends.

D.Playing basketball sometimes.

2What can we know about the research?

A.It lasted about 8 years.

B.The researchers admitted they used fake data.

C.The participants didn't include younger people.

D.Some participants died because of doing too much physical activity

3What is the author's attitude towards the researchers' conclusion?

A.Doubtful

B.Critical

C.Supportive

D.Neutral

4Which of the following is closest in meaning to the underlined word "reinforces" in the last paragraph?

A.Highlights

B.Conveys

C.Excludes

D.Denies

The new garbage sorting regulation has taken effect in Shanghai starting July 1. Many citizens are still confused about the classification of the four different types of trash. Thankfully, authorities have released an official guideline to explain the new rules.

The guideline, published by the Shanghai Greenery and Public Sanitation Bureau, provides a rather clear definition on the four kinds if waste: recyclable waste, harmful waste, household food waste and residual (剩余) waste.

A team from the U. K.'s National Centre for Sport and Exercise Medicine examined 14 lean and overweight men and analyzed their metabolic (新陈代谢) health. The participants were either assigned

Harmful waste, as the name suggests, includes various poisonous materials like used batteries, light bulbs, out-of-date medicines, paint and pesticides.

Household food waste — which is translated to "wet trash" in Chinese — refers to food leftovers, rotten food, pet food, fruit peels, remains of TCM herbs (中药) and flowers.

Paper, plastic, glass, metal and textiles (纺织品) are counted as recyclable waste.

The definition of residual waste is a little confusing. Anything that is not listed above belongs to this category.

As specific as the new guideline is, residents still have a hard time sorting trash correctly and are finding it challenging to memorize them all. For instance, both plastic bottles and bubble tea or coffee cups are plastic materials. However, the former falls to the category of recyclable waste and the latter belongs to residual waste. To save the hassle, some netizens have come up with their own way to sort trash.

"We should do this from a pig's angle," commented one netizen. "Those edible (可食用) for pigs are household food waste. Those even pigs don't want to eat are residual waste. If a pig consumes something and dies of it, then something must be harmful waste. Those that can be sold and the money we gain can be used to purchase pigs are recyclable waste."

The new regulation came into effect on July 1. Those who do not sort their trash properly will be fined RMB200.

1What do the old coats that you want to throw away belong to?

A.Harmful waste.

B.Wet trash.

C.Recyclable waste.

D.Residual waste

2What is the common point of "wet trash"?

A.They can be broken down easily.

B.They all come from plants.

C.They all have bad smells.

D.They all have poisonous materials.

3What is the tone of the netizen like?

A.Serious.

B.Humorous.

C.Delightful.

D.Uncertain.

4What does the passage mainly talk about?

A.The four sorts of garbing are forbidden in Shanghai.

B.Shanghai garbage sorting enforcement begins.

C.people are still confused about garbage sorting.

D.The netizens in Shanghai support the garbage sorting policy.

A 2018 report found that food waste would increase by a third to 2. 1billion tons by 2030. Beyond the cost of the waste itself, thrown-away food generates a gas that contributes to climate change.

Home delivery meal kits()can reduce food waste by more than two-thirds, but suppliers need to switch to reusable packaging to make them environmentally friendly.

Tailor-made meal kits cut waste by providing people with precise amounts of fresh ingredients(烹饪原料)for chosen recipes, meaning leftovers are minimized. But while the  delivery services score well on reducing food waste, buying the same food ingredients from the supermarket almost always saves energy overall simply because meal kits use so much single-use packaging. The good news is that if people have meals that are tailored for consumption, they won't overbuy and have less food waste. They fine-tune the amount of food to what they will actually eat.

Meal kits can reduce transport emissions(排放)if people go to the supermarket less frequently. If people only go and buy such goods as soap and toilet paper, they may only have to visit once every couple of months. A delivery truck can carry meals for a lot of people in the neighborhood. So dozens of car trips might be replaced with one truck trip.

However, study found that even if delivery meal kits reduced food waste to zero, they would still use up more energy overall than buying the same food from the supermarket unless the energy used for the meal kit packaging was cut by a fifth. The packaging is a killer if it's single-use and thrown away, which can make all the environmental benefits lost. But if the packaging can be reused, if it's glass bottles, like in the old days, we can get some benefits.

1What can we learn about home delivery meal kits?

A.They can cut down on daily expenses.

B.They will totally solve the problem of food waste.

C.They can keep energy consumption to a minimum.

D.They will benefit the environment with reusable packaging.

2What does the underlined word "fine-tune" in paragraph 3 mean?

A.Attach.

B.Adjust.

C.Raise.

D.Compare.

3The author suggests carrying meals with a delivery truck to__________.

A.reduce transport emissions

B.save more food

C.shop only in the supermarket

D.shorten car trip distances

4What's the author's attitude to meal kits?

A.Supportive.

B.Unfavorable.

C.Objective.

D.Indifferent.

Twenty-five years ago, as a parent educator, I began reading about the dangers of praise. I was completely shocked by what I was learning: praise is not good for our kids. How could that be? So I spent years talking with experts, reading about the effects of praise, and finally decided to close the door on praise and focus on building an encouraging family.

Even today, with many studies available to parents, I still hear people say, "How can that be? How can saying 'Good job' or 'You're smart' be bad?" I understand. It can be a difficult habit to break.

If we tell a boy "You are so smart!" when he brings home an A in his math test, how does he feel when he comes home with a D? If we've told him that he is smart, then he will more likely feel a failure when he struggles with homework — "I'm supposed to be smart. Why can't I do this?"

Praise trains children to depend on constant feedback on what a "great job" they are doing. This dependency shatters rather than builds children's confidence. Praise trains children to ask, "Do you like it?" "Did I do a good job?" "Are you proud of me?" They begin to believe that what others think is more important than what they think about their achievements and mistakes.

Praise breaks the relationship between parents and children. Without even realizing it, parents may be using praise as a tool to direct the child's behavior. The message is clear — I approve of you when you … and I do not approve of you when you … Living with this kind of constant judgment can damage not only the child's confidence but also the relationship.

The solution to the problem of praise is encouragement. Encouragement can be given at any time, to anyone, in any situation. It is a comment, an acknowledgment, a statement that focuses on effort, improvement or choice. Hearing "You are so smart!" can leave a child at a loss when they don't do well in a test. Using "That took a lot of work to come home with an A in your test …" gives a child the chance to be something else.

1What can be inferred from the first two paragraphs?

A. Many parents can't get on well with their children.         B. The author never shows any approval to his children.

C. It's hard for many parents to believe praise is harmful.         D. The author spent 25 years changing people's opinion on praise.

2According to the passage, it seems that parents' praise ______.

A. can lead to children's being smart                  B. might have just the opposite effect

C. is a good tool to educate their children         D. helps them get along well with their children

3Which of the following is a good example of encouragement?

A. You are very good at math.                             B. You are the best artist I have ever seen.

C. You have a problem and you have to fix it.         D. You didn't think you could finish in time, but you did.

根据第四段中的“Praise trains children to depend on constant feedback on what a ‘great job’ they are doing. This dependency shatters rather than builds children's confidence. Praise trains children to ask, ‘Do you like it?’‘Did I do a good job?’ ‘Are you proud of me?’They begin to believe that what others think is more important than what they think about their achievements and mistakes. ”以及第五段中的“Praise breaks the relationship between parents and children.”

根据最后一段中的“It is a comment, an acknowledgment, a statement that focuses on effort, improvement or choice.“可知鼓励是一个评论,认可,你个对于努力,进步,选择的陈述,所以选D

When I was 12 years old, I already knew that my teen years were going to be the worst years of my life. I was a total outsider, bullied (欺凌) at school. I felt completely alone in my small town.

But by starting to do volunteer work when I was 14, I turned my problem into a passion for helping others. The opportunity to practice kindness made me feel like my life had a greater purpose. The more positive energy I shared, the more kindness and appreciation I received. I realized that my purpose in life would be to reach out to people, specifically teenagers, and help them feel less alone.

Books were my true friends back then. I was so thankful that the authors wrote those books. The kindness they offered me with their books saved my life. One of my biggest dreams was to become an author so I could write books that would help other teenagers the way those books helped me.

My dream career, one I thought was only possible for the authors I loved, is what I am doing now. I have been a full-time author of teen novels since 2007 and am grateful for this amazing opportunity to reach out to readers every single day.

I visited Copenhagen for the first time last Easter. As a studentI'm always strapped for cashso I assumed I could only afford to breathe the air — but luckily everything about Copenhagen is breathtaking.

I was staying in an Airbnb, and rented a bike so I could cover more ground. One of the first places I visited was the Rundetaarn, or “round tower” built in the 17th century as an astronomical observatory. It has an equestrian staircase (a wide set of stairs big enough for horses to use) that went on and on. As I was going up, I stopped to visit the tower's library hall. At the top, there's a glass platform that gives a view 80-foot straight down, as well as a bell loft. Luckily, the views over Copenhagen from the top were well worth the climb.

After coming down, I hiked up to the Kastellet Fortress to see the famous Little Mermaid statue. Taking a photo with her was almost impossible with all the tourists crowding around—but sitting there and hearing the lapping waves of the deep blue Baltic Sea, waiting for the sun to set, was an unforgettable and calming experience.

The next day, I visited the Glyptotek art museum, exploring the grand exhibits. I looked into the marble eyes of many Roman godsand walked down dimly lit staircases to see mummies from Egypt.

Before I unwillingly boarded the train back to the airport, I told myself that I must visit again—to experience the thrills of Tivoli Gardens, try more of the street food and everything else from this amazing city.

1Why did the author rent a bike?

A. Because she loved to ride a bike.                    B. Because she didn't afford to rent a car.

C. Because she found nowhere to rent other vehicles.         D. Because she wanted to see as many attractions as possible.

2What did the author find difficult at the Kastellet Fortress?

A. Finding a sitting place                                     B. Waiting for the sun to set

C. Listening to the sound of waves                     D. Having a photo taken with a statue.

3Which of the following didn't the author visit?

A. Rundetaarn       B. Tivoli Gardens       C. Glyptotek art museum       D. Little Mermaid Statue

4What is the author's purpose in writing the text?

A. To remember a holiday                                   B. To introduce a new attraction

C. To share her travel experience                        D. To show her love of Copenhagen

Plants are boring. They just sit there photosynthesizing (光合作用) while animals have all the fun. Right? Not so much. A new study has found that there is a long history of interactions between ants and plants. The ant and plant co-evolution (协同进化) started with ants feeding on plants and plants evolving ant-friendly features.

Plants make a number of different structures that are specific for ant use. Some plants have evolved features that persuade ants into defending them from attack from other insects and even mаmmаlѕ. Тhеѕе іnсludе hollow thorns that аntѕ will live іnѕіdе, or ехtra nесtаr (琼浆) оn lеаvеѕ or stems for the ants to eat. Some ants will just cheat and take the nectar and run, but some will stick around and attack anything that tries to hurt the plant. Other plants get ants to help them move their seeds around, by providing them with rich food packets attached to the seeds. The ant will pick up the seed and carry it away, eat the food packet, and leave the seed - often in a nutrient-rich area where it'll grow better, and since it's farther away from its parent, they won't have to compete for resources.

But scientists weren't sure how the evolutionary relationship between ants and plants got started. If evolution is an arms race between species developing ways to make use of their neighbors, then scientists wanted to know whether plants or ants fired the first shot. It was a chicken-and-egg question, whether things started with ants developing behaviors to take advantage of plants, or plants evolving structures to take advantage of ants.

The history of ants and plants evolving together goes back to the time of the dinosaurs, and it's not easy to tell from fossils who fired the first shot. However, it is a question of little significance. Scientists say their study maters because it provides a look at how these widespread and complex interactions evolved.

1Some plants attach food packets to their seeds in order to        .

A.reward the ants

B.make a fool of ants

C.provide nutrition for the seeds

D.get the seeds moved around

2What does Paragraph 2 mainly tell us?

A.How plants and ants interact.

B.What ants do to protect plants.

C.How plants and ants survive attacks.

D.Why plants and ants need co-evolution.

3Which is true about the evolutionary relationship between ants and plants?

A.Ants depended more upon plants.

B.It caused a race for better evolution.

C.How it got started was uncertain.

D.It was of little value for future studies.

4What's the author's purpose of writing the passage?

A.To introduce a science research method.

B.To inform readers of a latest research finding

C.To arouse readers' interest in science research.

D.To criticize people's traditional views about plants.
