I was getting ready to go to bed when the phone rang. This could not be good. My mind raced through the list of family members who might need help, but the voice was hardly familiar.

“Lindy, this is Lesley.” I don’t know Lesley well. We did occasionally speak with each other, but to say we were friends was not appropriate. I asked what she needed. Perhaps something really awful caused her to reach someone she barely knew. Instead, she asked me, “Do you have room for a turkey? In your freezer?” We had lots of room in our freezer, and in fact, too much. “Sure,” I responded, “did your freezer break down?” “Not exactly,” Lesley replied, but I will explain when I arrive.”

Minutes later came a huge freezer truck. Lesley stepped down and explained the lease(租约) of the grocery store her husband serviced had run out and that they had to empty all the freezers that very night. Thinking it was a shame to throw away all this good food, they decided to drop off food to anyone she could think of. Noticing our freezer was pretty empty, Lesley asked to fill it up. Our home was their last stop and anything left would have to be put in our freezer. An hour later, everything finished, I asked her, “When will you come back for all this?” Lesley laughed, “We don’t want it back. It is yours! Thanks for helping us out!” Then they waved goodbye and drove away.

“For helping them out?” We opened our freezer door. Inside were all expensive foods we never bought but often longed to try. We were struggling to buy groceries, yet it was not something we shared with anyone. However, our needs were met in an unexpected way, by that call, “Do you have room for a turkey?”

6. Why did Lesley call up the writer?

A. Because the writer was her good friend.

B. Because she knew the writer was in need.

C. Because something awful had happened.

D. Because she didn’t want food to go to waste.

7. What can be a suitable title for the text?

A. Who is my angel? B. Do you have room for a turkey?

C. Unexpected bargains. D. A friend on speaking terms.

A conference was held with former technology industry leaders calling for urgent measures to protect children from smartphone addiction(上瘾).

Among those urging major changes is Tristan Harris--- a former high-level employee at Google. He just launched a group that will seek to gather and publish evidence of how digital devices and social media can harm children and young people. Harris says he believes companies like Google, Facebook and Apple have a “moral responsibility” not to create technology products that can “hijack how the mind works”.

The conference where Harris spoke was sponsored by Common Sense Media, a child and family activist group. The organization says research suggests that half of all teenagers feel addicted to their mobile devices, while about 60 percent of parents believe their kids are addicted.

The group also cites a recent study of eighth graders that found heavy users of technology were 56 percent more likely to say they are unhappy, while 27 percent more likely to be depressed. Even Facebook cited research last year suggesting that social media use can harm mental health when used in certain ways.

James Steyer is the founder of Common Sense. He says more than half of schools in the US are already members of the organization. The group provides teachers and parents with learning materials intended to help students develop critical thinking skills and balance their digital lives.

Some US schools, however, have tried to limit or remove technology to improve learning. One of them is in Silicon Valley, the center of the American tech-industry.

The Waldorf School of the Peninsula does not use any computers or digital technology in its education programs up to the seventh grade. The schools’ website says while Waldorf teachers recognize the role technology can play in the classroom, it must wait until the student reaches the right developmental age. Normally when students reach high school, they are allowed to use computers and digital tools in the classroom.

8. What is Facebook, Google and Apple’s “moral responsibility” according to Tristan Harris?

A. Preventing children from chatting on social media.

B. Finding a way to get children away from addiction.

C. Providing parents with materials to help their children.

D. Stopping making products that do harm to young people.

9. What does the underlined word in Paragraph Two mean?

A. control B. exercise

C. benefit D. entertain

10. What do we know from the last two paragraphs?

A. Waldorf School bans technology from its education programs.

B. Waldorf School limits the use of digital tools in its classrooms.

C. Waldorf School pays much attention to improving learning.

D Waldorf School doesn’t believe that computers can improve learning.

11. Which can be the best title for the passage?

A. Computer Companies Should Live up to Their Moral Responsibility

B. Digital Addiction Does Harm to Children’s Mental Health

C. A Conference Calls for Actions to Protect Children from Digital Addiction

D. Waldorf School Doesn’t Use Digital Tools in Its Education Program

Carrie Gracie is knowledgeable about China and its affairs. She also has a reputation as a generous colleague. She has resigned from her job as China editor because her employers will not pay her at the same rate as they pay the handful of men who do a similarly challenging and important job.

She has resigned because she refused to go on colluding(共谋) with the BBC’s dishonesty about its failure to give women and men equal pay for equal work.

Gracie was recruited to the job, because she had all the talent and skills the BBC needed to cover the difficult international and domestic story of the rise of China. One of the conditions she set for taking it was equal pay with the BBC’s other international editors, familiar names including Jon Sopel in Washington and Jeremy Bowen in the Middle East.

Last summer, the government forced the BBC to publish which of the familiar names on radio and TV earned over 150,000. The results exposed an astonishing pay gap. They also showed Gracie that her employers had misled her.

Gracie sets out all her efforts to get her bosses to do what they had originally promised her, but they fail to respond adequately. Instead, they prevaricate (搪塞) and offer her a pay rise that still would not have delivered equality. They thought they could buy her off; they thought that the reputational hazard she was running would scare her away from the fight.

The BBC is wrong this time! Gracie has chosen to resign rather than give in because she thinks that it is her responsibility to stop the BBC doing something stupid. She is fighting for women’s legal rights.

Gracie said she hoped she wouldn't be remembered as the woman who complained about money, but as a great journalist. She is proving that they are two sides of the same invaluable coin.

Carrie Gracie’s dispute with the BBC isn’t about money---it’s about dignity!

12. What do we know about Carrie Gracie?

A. She is very strict with her office colleague.

B. She has a good command of China’s affairs.

C She was working together with Jon Sopel in Washington.

D. She has a reputation for covering sports news.

13. What does Carrie Gracie demand from BBC

A. Equal pay for equal work.

B. Better pay for more work.

C. An apology for misconduct.

D. A response to her complaint.

14. We can infer that _____.

A. the BBC didn’t promise Gracie equal pay with her male colleague

B. the BBC dismissed Carrie Gracie due to her demand for higher pay

C. the BBC was forced to give Gracie equal pay for equal work

D. the BBC kept the pay of its familiar names on TV and radio secret before last summer

15. What is the author’s attitude towards the BBC?

A. positive B. vague

C. critical D. cautious
