44C。下文的responsibility, problemsolving以及working as part of a team都是在对前面的reallife skills进行举例说明,因此选择include“包括

(2009·湖南)

Andrew Ritchie, inventor of the Brompton folding bicycle, once said that the perfect portable bike would be like a magic carpet...You could fold it up and put it into your pocket or handbag. Then he paused, But you’ll always be limited by the size of the wheels. And so far no one has invented a folding wheel.

It was a rare—indeed unique—occasion when I was able to put Ritchie right. A 19thcentury inventor, William Henry James Grout, did in fact design a folding wheel. His bike, predictably named the Grout Portable, had a frame that split into two and a larger wheel that could be separated into four pieces. All the bits fitted into Grout’s Wonderful Bag, a leather case.

Grout’s aim: to solve the problems of carrying a bike on a train. Now doesn’t that sound familiar? Grout intended to find a way of making a bike small enough for train travel: his bike was a huge beast. And importantly, the design of early bicycles gave him an advantage: in Grout’s day, tyres were solid, which made the business of splitting a wheel into four separate parts relatively simple. You couldn’t do the same with a wheel fitted with a onepiece inflated(充气的) tyre.

So, in a 21stcentury context, is the idea of the folding wheel dead? It is not. A British design engineer, Duncan Fitzsimons, has developed a wheel that can be squashed into something like a slender ellipse(椭圆). Throughout, the tyre remains inflated.

Will the young Fitzsimons’s folding wheel make it into production? I haven’t the foggiest idea. But his inventiveness shows two things. First, people have been saying for more than a century that bike design has reached its limit, except for gradual advances. It’s as silly a concept now as it was 100 years ago: there’s plenty still to go for. Second, it is in the field of folding bikes that we are seeing the most interesting inventions. You can buy a folding bike for less than 1,000 that can be knocked down so small that it can be carried on a plane—minus wheels, of course—as hand baggage.

Folding wheels would make all manner of things possible. Have we yet got the magic carpet of Andrew Ritchie’s imagination? No. But it’s progress.

56We can infer from Paragraph 1 that the Brompton folding bike ______.

A. was portable

B. had a folding wheel

C. could be put in a pocket

D. looked like a magic carpet

57We can learn from the text that the wheels of the Grout Portable ______.

A. were different to separate

B. could be split into 6 pieces

C. were fitted with solid tyres

D. were hard to carry on a train

58We can learn from the text that Fitzsimons’s invention ______.

A. kept the tyre as a whole piece

B. was made into production soon

C. left little room for improvement

D. changed our views on bag design

59Which of the following would be the best title for the text?

A. Three Folding Bike Inventors

B. The Making of a Folding Bike

The death of Steve Irwin earlier this month caught the world by surprise. The adventurous Australian TV star of hundreds of animal programs had placed himself in harm’s way countless times.

Irwin, 44, was diving near the Great Barrier Reef when he frightened a large stingray(黄貂鱼). The stingray reacted by tying Irwin with its tail. The tail’s 10inch barb(倒钩) struck Irwin in the heart and killed him.

Many mourners praised Irwin for his strong interest in conservation. He protested wildlife hunts in Australia. He also organized an animal breeding program at the Australian Zoo. The program aided the survival of creatures such as the crested iguana(冠状蜥) and the canopy goanna(巨蜥)

Germaine Greer, an Australian writer, wasn’t as kind about Irwin’s treatment of animals. Though she praised Irwin’s conservation efforts, she said he also misused wild animals. There was no habitat that Irwin hesitated to break into. There was not an animal he was not prepared to push” she added.

Robert Thompson, a professor of communications, says Irwin’s shows were like most reality programming—a mixture of fact and fiction. Some astonishing performances on Irwin’s show were less dangerous than they appeared through the use of editing and camera angles. What Steve Irwin did was wrestle nature documentaries away from education to entertainment” Thompson told Weekly Reader.

Thompson believes that Irwin’s death shocked many people because of the way television mixes reality and fiction. On reality shows, such as Crocodile Hunter and Fear Factor, participants always escape unharmed. Probably, a lot of people think of the crocodile hunter as fictional character not permitted to die in real life” he says.

60It can be inferred that Irwin ______.

A. was killed by the fish while trying to catch it

B. had experienced numberous dangers in his life

C. was only interested in animals in water

D. was making a TV program about stingrays when the fish struck him

61Irwin is also famous for ______.

A. wildlife protection

B. setting up the Australian Zoo

C. his TV programs about rare animals

D. putting an end to wildlife hunts in Australia

62What was Germaine Greer’s attitude towards Irwin’s treatment of animals?

A. She felt in acceptable.

B. She was in favor of it.

C. She was against it.

D. She kept silent about it.

63According to Robert Thompson, Irwin’s shows ______.

A. were a combination of reality and fantasy

B. focused mainly on dangerous images

C. were educative and entertaining

D. were far beyond facts and reality

[答案]

People believe that climbing can do good to health. Where can you learn the skill of climbing then? If you think that you have to go to the mountains to learn how to climb, you’re wrong. Many Americans are learning to climb in city gyms(体育馆). Here, people are learning on special climbing walls. The climbing wall goes straight up and has small holding places for hands and feet.

How do people climb the wall? To climb, you need special shoes and a harness(保护带) around your chest to hold you. There are ropes(绳索) tied to your harness. The ropes hold you in place so that you don’t fall. A beginner’s wall is usually about 15 feet high, and you climb straight up. There are small pieces of metal that stick out for you to stand on and hold on to. Sometimes it’s easy to see the new piece of metal. Sometimes, it’s not. The most difficult is to control your fear. It’s normal for humans to be afraid of falling, so it’s difficult not to feel fear. But when you move away from the wall, the harness and the ropes hold you, and you begin to feel safe. You move slowly until you reach the top.

Climbing attracts people because it’s good exercise for almost everyone. You use your whole body, especially your arms and legs. This sport gives your body a complete workout. When you climb, both your mind and your body can become stronger.

69The most difficult thing to do in wall climbing is ______.

A. to tie ropes to your harness

(2008·浙江卷)

A simple piece of clothesline hangs between some environmentally friendly Americans and their neighbors.

On one side stand those who see clothes dryers(干衣机) as a waste of energy and a major polluter of the environment. As a result, they are turning to clotheslines as part of the whatIcando environmentalism(环境保护主义)”.

On the other side are people who are against drying clothes outside, arguing that clotheslines are unpleasant to look at. They have persuaded Homeowners Associations (HOAs) across the US. to ban outdoor clotheslines, because clothesline drying also tends to lower home value in the neighborhood. This had led to a RighttoDry Movement that is calling for laws to be passed to protect people’s right to use clotheslines.

So far, only three states have laws to protect clotheslines. RighttoDry supporters argue that there should be more.

Matt Reck, 37, is the kind of ecoconscious(有生态意识的) person who feeds his trees with bathwater and reuses water drops from his air conditioners to water plants. His family also uses a clothesline. But on July 9, 2007, the HOA in Wake Forest, North Carolina, told him that a dissatisfied neighbour had telephoned them about his clothesline. The Recks paid no attention to the warning and still dried their clothes on a line in the yard. Many people say they are environmentally friendly but they don’t take matters in their own hands” says Reck. The local HOA has decided not to take any action, unless more neighbors come to them.

North Carolina lawmakers are saying that banning clotheslines is not the right thing to do. But HOAs and housing businesses believe that clothesline drying reminds people of poor neighborhoods. They worry that if buyers think their future neighbors can’t even afford dryers, housing prices will fall.

Environmentalists say such worries are not necessary, and in view of global warming, that idea needs to change. As they say, The clothesline is beautiful. Hanging clothes outside should be encouraged. We all have to do at least something to slow down the process of global warming.

72One of the reasons why supporters of clothes dryers are trying to ban clothesline drying is that ______.

A. clothes dryers are more efficient

B. clothesline drying reduces home value

C. clothes dryers are energysaving

D. clothesline drying is not allowed in most US. states

73Which of the following best describes Matt Reck?

A. He is a kindhearted man.

B. He is an impolite man.

C. He is an experienced gardener.

D. He is a man of social responsibility.

74Who are in favor of clothesline drying?

A. Housing businesses.

B. Environmentalists.

C. Homeowners Associations.

D. Reck’s dissatisfied neighbors.

75What is mainly discussed in the text?

A. Clothesline drying: a way to save energy and money.

B. Clothesline drying: a lost art rediscovered.

C. Opposite opinions on clothesline drying.

D. Different varieties of clotheslines.

[答案]

本文主要讲的是晾衣绳与环境保护的关系。

72B。判断推理题。从第三段第二句中“...clothesline drying also tends to lower home value in the neighborhood”可以推出。

73D。判断推理题。从对Matt Reck的描述推出,ABC文章中都不能体现。

74B。细节理解题。in favor of意为支持,支持晾衣绳的为Environmentalists

75C。主旨大意题。中心词是clothesline drying,文章中有多种观点,故选C

[参考答案]

The pocket money resources for the American and Chinese high school students come almost the same way: money from their parents, income from parttime jobs and scholarships they can get, but the percentage of each is quite different. Half of the American students’ pocket money is from their parents, 35% from parttime jobs and 15% from scholarships, while the Chinese students get 90% of their pocket money from their parents and only 10% from parttime jobs and scholarships.

It seems that there are two reasons for this difference. One is that the American students have more opportunities to do parttime jobs or get scholarships and the other is that the Chinese students have little time to do parttime jobs.
