Eva Mozes Kor has good reasons to look down upon Oskar Groning. When she and her
twin sister, Miriam, arrived in the Auschwitz death camp, they were met by Josef Mengele
and became part of the cruel scientist's experiments. Groning was a junior squad(小队)leader
at the camp.
While Groning could argue he was not directly responsible for procedures carried out on twins,
nor for the mass murder of so many others, he played a critical role in the effort to kill Jews.
After the war Groning led an ordinary, quiet life until he became alarmed by the rise of
Holocaust deniers. He went public with his role and in September 2014 was charged as an
accessory(从犯) to murder.
When Groning went on trial in April 2015, Eva Mozes Kor was called as a witness. After
her session, she walked straight up to the 93-year-old former Nazi and shook his hand.
Eva Mozes Kor will never forget nor excuse what the Nazis did. Her two books make that
clear: Surviving the Angel of Death. and the earlier Echoes from Auschwitz. She has also
spent her post-war years drawing attention to the Holocaust, in the hope of preventing a
repeat of its horrors.
At the same time, she is dedicated (致力 ) to healing rather than revenge. As she wrote in
a Facebook post:
Forgiving does not mean forgetting-we all want to prevent these thing's from ever happening
again. Forgiveness is about self-healing , self-liberation , and self-empowerment. . . . Let's a// work
together to teach the world how to heal.
As a survivor suffering so much, Eva Mozes Kor is a role model for the kind of forgiveness that
mends souls, a forgiveness that carries with it the responsibility to work for a world in which such
horrors no longer happen.
24. At the camp, Groning _ .
A. killed many Jews directly
B. treated Eva Mozes Kor badly
C. experimented on Eva Mozes Kor
D. contributed to killing more Jews
25. Facing Holocaust deniers again, Groning felt _ .
A. amazed B. upset C. fearful D. quiet
26. Why did Eva Mozes Kor shake hands with Groning?
A. To show her mercy. B. To appreciate his justice.
C. To expect to forgive him. D. To encourage others to follow her.
27. What is the author's attitude to Eva Mozes Kor's forgiveness?
A. Objective. B. Favorable. C. Doubtful. D. Unclear.

Blue-eyed people have been living in Europe for at least 7,000 years, scientists have
discovered.
A man who lived on the Iberian Peninsula before Europeans became farmers probably had
blue eyes but dark hair and skin, according to scientists who have sequenced (按序排列 ) his
DNA. This surprising combination of eye, hair and skin coloring may not have been unusual
during his lifetime, but it is no longer seen among modern Europeans, reported by the journal
Nature.
The man, a Neolithic hunter-gatherer known to scientists as La Brana I, is of great
interest to scientists because he offers a snapshot (简况) of what was in Europeans' DNA
before agriculture spread through the continent. Experts have theorized that certain genetic
feature spread quickly among humans after they adopted the farming lifestyle. La Brana I
shows that at least some of their predictions were correct.
The man's skeleton, along with that of a male companion, was discovered in 2006 in a
cave in what is now northeastern Spain. The site, known as La Brana-Arintero, sits about 5,
000 feet above sea level, and the cave provided a cold, refrigerator-like environment that
preserved his DNA.
In the lab, scientists were able to remove enough DNA from a single tooth to reconstruct
La Brana I's entire genome (基因组). They compared it to the DNA of other ancient
Europeans (including Otzi, the 5, 300-year-old mummy found in an Alpine glacier) and
determined that he was a closer match with hunter-gatherers than with farmers.
When it came to genes that would influence La Brana I's appearance, the researchers
found that their 7,OOO-year-old subject had versions of two skin pigment(色素) genes that are
either very rare or nonexistent among Europeans today. Then they looked at other places in
the genome that influence pigmentation(色素沉着) and found a mix of ancient and modern
gene variants(变种). Taken together, La Brana I's DNA “is likely to have resulted in dark
skin pigmentation and dark or brown hair," they wrote.
However, his DNA indicates that his eyes were most likely blue, the scientists found.
This suggests that gene variants for light-colored eyes and skin did not spread together, they
wrote, adding that La Brana I's combination “of dark skin and non-brown eyes is unique and
no longer present in contemporary European populations. " Today, a blue-eyed person would
typically have fair skin.
To get some idea of whether La Brana I's coloring was unusual for his day, the researchers will
try to sequence the DNA of his companion, who has been named La Brana II.
28. Why are scientists interested in La Brana I?
A. They can know Europeans' DNA.
B. They can know the ancient agriculture in Europe.
C. They can know European hunter-gatherers' DNA.
D. They can know some of their predictions were correct.
29. La Brana I remains as it was due to .
A. dry weather B. a cold condition
C. proper protection D. a high cave
30. Which of the following is TRUE?
A. La Brana I's gene variants spread together.
B. La Brana I's DNA influences his appearance.
C. La Brana I's appearance influences contemporary Europeans.
D. La Brana I's gene is completely different from the contemporary Europeans'.
31. What does the last paragraph suggest?
A. La Brana II has the same genome with La Brana I.
B. Blue-eyed people were common in Europe 7,000 years ago.
C. Brana I's combination of dark skin and non-brown eyes is unique.
D. It's not certain that La Brana's appearance was common at that time.

The huge explosion in Tianjin is only a symptom of a much bigger problem plaguing(折
磨)China today ! Laws are often not enforced(执行) , or are enforced half-heartedly. The law
clearly prohibits storage of dangerous goods and chemicals within a certain radius of residential
areas, and there must be strict adherence(坚持)to rules on storage and transportation, etc.
The fact that this accident occurred so close to residential areas, resulting in devastating
damage to homes and serious injuries to residents, shows that the law was not strictly
enforced. Whoever approved the siting of that logistic plant (物流工厂) in that particular area
has a lot to answer for. Often, officials come to take action only after lives are lost.
Another case in point is the unfortunate death of a young mother in the escalator accident
in a shopping mall recently. Problems with elevators and escalators have been around for
ages, and residents have made countless complaints, but to no avail. After the accident, city
officials fan out all over the country checking on escalators for faults, and many escalators
have been shut down for repairs.
This kind of action is a kneejerk reaction (习惯反应) to a serious disaster! There are
many disasters waiting to happen. And all are due to weak or non-existent enforcement. For
instance, it's well known that many residents add an extra floor to the roof-top of their
apartment bocks, endangering the safety of the block, while others dig into their ground floor
units to create an extra basement living area, hacking away concrete slabs and cutting steel
bars which are the basic foundation of the building, seriously jeodardizing(危害) its safety.
Neighbors complain, city officials come round and leave, saying they can't do anything as the
owner wouldn't open his door for an inspection! They would often leave a note on the owner's
door telling him to stop construction, but true to form, the owner just ignores it. This is the
kind of enforcement we see so often in China.
What is urgently needed in China is a complete overhaul(大修) of the enforcement
practice, with every official held accountable for his failure to enforce the law strictly! Why
wait till lives are lost before acting?
32. What does the fact that the huge explosion in Tianjin resulted in serious injuries show?
A. It is very difficult to enforce laws.
B. People are not aware of the danger.
C. The law was not strictly enforced.
D. There is no law for ensuring us safe.
33.In what purpose do some residents dig into their ground floor units according to the
passage ?
A. To follow their neighbors.
B. To create an extra basement living area.
C. To protect themselves safe.
D. To add an extra floor to the roof-top of their apartment bocks.
34. How did the author develop the passage?
A. Topic-Argument-Explanation.
B. Opinion-Discussion-Description.
C. Main idea-Comparison-Supporting examples.
D. Introduction-Supporting examples-Conclusion.
35. The author wrote the passage to____
A. blame some officials
B.make a complaint
C. call on acting before lives are lost
D. urge that more laws should be made

How to Start Your Day Right
What we do in our day, how we act, and how we react to situations and to people, is
equally important to how we start our day. Often, we start our day with a schedule. But less
often do we choose to do certain things that will help jump-start our day. It's important to get
our day off to a good start because how we start our day will determine how the rest of the day
goes. Here I share some tricks with you to start your day right.
3 6 Whatever you believe can and will come to pass. Believe that you can accomplish
great things and you can reach your goals, and you will. If you start your day with fear,
you're already on a path to ruin the rest of your day.
Leave yesterday in the past. Yesterday has come and gone. Too many people do not
progress in life because they live in the events of yesterday. 37 You cannot live it over.
You cannot do it over . Stop regretting and start living today.
Pursue purpose. Every day you live is based upon the days that have already passed.
Each day should be a strong pursuit of purpose. 38 That will last longer than you.
Set goals. Start your day with goals that you want to reach. 3 9 On your worst days,
if you keep your goals front and center in your mind, they will push you and pull you forward.
Adjust your attitude. We don't feel great everyday but we can choose to feel great, look
great, and be great with a little adjustment of the attitude. The right attitude will carry you a
very long way.__40
A. Be sure to have faith.
B. Don't make it too difficult to reach.
C. Make right choices when facing trouble.
D. There is nothing you can do to change the past.
E. Struggle to do something great and meaningful.
F. Your goals will keep you focused, stable, and clear.
G. The right attitude can also change situations to turn in your favor.
