Today I will talk about the teaching ideas of this lesson-The economy or the environment-must we choose? in unit 5. It includs six parts: Analysing teaching material, Analysing the knowledge level and study characteristics of high school students, Teaching and studying methods, Teaching procedure, Blackboard desigh, Summary and evaluation.

Analysing teaching material

This passage is an opening speech from a television debate on the environment. With the development of economy, the waste and pollution to environment are becoming more and more heavy, which relate to the exist of humen beings and the earth. If companies deal with these pollution in a right way, the living stations of people will become better and have a higher happy index. Students should think a better way to achieve the balance between the development and the environment protection. Students should know that make final decision after listening both sides.

·Teaching aims

According to the new lesson standards, students should improve the ability to use English in all dimensions. Today I will made teaching aims in three dimensions:

1. knowledge aims

learn the serious task of protecting our environment

how to read a debate

Grasp the use of new words, phrases and important sentence structures

2. ability aims

Apply the reading strategy: skimming and scanning to get useful imformation

Give an oral presentation about your ideas about what should we do to keep benefits of both sides

3. moral aims

feel the the importance of protecting our environment

Analysing the knowledge level and study characteristics of high school students

Students in high school has already studied English for six years. They have basic ability of listening, reading, speaking, writing in English, but still lack the studying techniques in their studying. Most of them hate remembering vocabulary and put emphases on writing and grammer. They have big problems in speaking and listening. Most students lack intertests in studying English and just for exams. Their pronunciation is also not accurate due to few spoken practice. Analysing the knowledge level and study characteristics of high school students helps improving the teaching and studying methods.

Teaching and studying methods

I will do my best to carry out the following theories: make the students the real master in class while the the teacher myself as a guide; improve the studying interests of the students after learning their life experience and cognition level; provide many practice chances to develop their ability of cooperation and communication; receive moral education while learning English. I will adopt these activities: question-and-answer activity; watch-and-listen activity; free discussion; pair work and so on.

Teaching aids: some pictures; a projector; multimedia; the blackboard

Teaching procedure

A) Lead-in(5min)

I will use computer to show some pictures of heavy pollution all over the world which can arouse their attention and interest. Then I will ask: what do you think is the most important thing in today’s worldThis can lead the students to the new lesson and prctise their speaking and thinking ability.

B) Fast-reading(5min)

Ask the students to read this passage with the following questions quickly, which can trains their reading strategy-skimming and scanning and the ability to get useful imformation.

C) Intensive reading(12min)

In this part, I will choose some important paragraphs and explain new words and phrases in it and let them pay attention to the writers’ feelings.

1. Ask students to read a paragraph loudly together. This can make the students pay attention on this article and also improve their studying initiative.

2. Analyse this pragraph

I will explain the grammer and sentence structure and the usage of some new words and expressions in this paragraph. I always believe the teaching books are most important than other tutorials, even the exercises on teaching books are reasonable than other exercise books which put heavy weight on students. If students grasp the knowledge points on teaching books, they can deal with varieties of other exercise or exams. So I should explain this to them carefully.

3. read this pragraph again

After the deep analyse of this paragraph, I will ask them to read it again. They should pay attention to pronunciation and intonation this time. In order to deal with exams, most students spend most of their time on exercises, but ignore the speaking and listening. They should have more opportunities to practise.

4. listen to this pragraph

Ask students to listen carefully and pay attention to the pronunciation and intonation. This can deepen the understanding of this passage and also practise their listening ability. This reflects the consolidation theory of teaching.

D) Practise(5min)

1. answer questions on page 24

2. match new words

These exercises can consolidate what they have learned in class.

E) Discussion(8min)

Ask students to discuss how to solve the contradiction between economy and environment. This activity can practise their oral expression and improve their awareness of cooperation and communication as well as their imagination.

F) Consolidation(6)

Close their books and recall what we have learned in this class and ask the students trying to recall this article. Make some sentences using the words and sentence structure learned in this passage. This will deepen their knowledge points learned in this class.

G) Homework(2)

Write a article about your ideas about how to clean up the environment. This can make the students use the learned words and phrases and sentence structures to express their own idears.

Blackboard desigh

In the middle, I will write the title of this article. On the left, write reading strategy: reading a debate. On the right, write new phrases and important sentence structures.

Summary and evaluation

That’s all about my ideas of teaching. In my class, I will try my best to make the students the real master of the class, make them speak more, express more and practise more! Thank you!
