In recent years, more and more people like to keep pets such as a dog, a cat, a monkey and other animals. But usually people would accept tame(温顺的) and loyal(忠诚的) animals as pets rather than dangerous ones such as a lion,a tiger or a snake.

People love pets and take good care of them. The owners usually regard pets as good friends and some even consider them as members of the family. Although they are not human beings(人类), their behavior sometimes is better than human beings, for they are always loyal to their owners. There are always many stories about brave and smart pets. We often hear that a pet dog saved the owner's life or traveled thousands of miles to return home. Such stories often make pets more lovely.

Some pets can also be trained to help people with some special work. For example, trained dogs can help the blind to walk and trained dogs and pigs can even help police to find where drugs are easily.

But pets are sometimes trouble-makers. Some pets like dogs or snakes may hurt people without any warning. Some people may become ill after being hurt because of the virus carried by the pets.

Daniel Olin was 11 years old when his parents moved to Canada. He liked his new school and made friends there, but then things at home started to change. His mum and dad began to argue and the arguments got worse and worse until one day, Daniel's mum left. With his father working long hours, Daniel felt very lonely and very unhappy. He wanted to escape, to run away. And that’s what he did.

Very early one terribly cold morning when the snow was deep on the ground, he packed a bag with some clothes, some chocolate and a map of Canada and set off to a forest. He ran and ran until he could hardly breathe.

His feet were heavy with the snow but he still walked on through deep snow, not even watching where he was going.

Then, disaster struck. A rock hidden by the deep snow caught his feet and Daniel fell to the ground. He had broken the bone. He was very cold and was starting to feel tired, but he knew that if he fell asleep in the snow, he would certainly die from the cold.

A tree shook ahead. From within the branches, a pair of yellow eyes watched Daniel. The puma (美洲狮) had been following him. A puma is a large wild cat with claws that could tear Daniel into pieces. But instead of moving in for the kill, the puma walked up to Daniel and lay across his chest, arms and legs. Daniel was too frightened to move, but soon the warmth of the animal reached Daniel and he began to feel better. From time to time, the puma pressed his muzzle (鼻) against Daniel and rocked his head gently. Clearly, the puma knew that Daniel must not fall asleep. This animal should have been a real danger to Daniel and yet the boy began to feel safe. They remained like that for several hours until Daniel and the puma heard voices.

C. To kill Daniel. D. To keep Daniel awake.

49. What is the best title for the story?

During the Christmas shopping rush in London, the intriguing story was reported of a tramp(流浪汉) who, apparently through no fault of his own, found himself locked in a well-known chain store late on Christmas Eve. No doubt the store was crowded with last minute Christmas shoppers and the staff were dead beat and longing to get home. Presumably all the proper Security checks were made before the store was locked and they left to enjoy the three-day holiday untroubled by customers desperate to get last minute Christmas presents

However that may be, our tramp found himself alone in the store and decided to make the best of it. There was food, drink, bedding and camping equipment, of which he made good use. There must also have been television sets and radios Though it was not reported if he took advantage of these facilities, when the shop re-opened, he was discovered in bed with a large number of empty bottles beside him. He seems to have been a man of good humor and philosophic temperament---as indeed vagrants(流浪汉) very commonly arc. Everyone also was enjoying Christmas, so he saw no good reason why he should not do the same. He submitted, cheerfully enough, to being taken way by the police. Perhaps he had bad a better Christmas than usual. He was sent to prison for Seven days. The judge awarded no compensation to the chain store for the food and drink our tramp had consumed. They had, in his opinion, already received valuable free publicity from the coverage the story received in the newspapers and on television. Perhaps the judge had had a good Christmas too.

A. for his mistakes. B.due to a misunderstanding.

C. by accident. D.through an error of judgment.

51.The staff were 'dead beat' means they were _____

A. half asleep. B. exhausted. C. irritable. D. forgetful.

C. went to sleep for 2 days. D. had a Christmas party.

53. When the tramp was arrested, he _____

A. laughed at the police. B. looked forward to going to pr)son.

C. rook his bottles with him. D. didn't make any fuss.

54. Why didn't the judge award compensation to the chain store?

A. The tramp had stolen nothing of value.

B. The store had profited by the incident.

C .The tramp deserved a happy Christmas.

D. The store was responsible for what happened

C

Cause and effect is one way to explain things that happen around us. Many things happen because something caused or influenced them to happen. Sometimes it is hard to look at a cause and find out what caused or influenced them to happen. Sometimes it is hard to look at a cause and find out what causes the effect. It may help you to start with the effect and use your reasoning(推理的) skills. Think about all the things you know that could be reasons for the effect you can see.

For example, you may see someone putting on a heavy jacket. This is the effect. To look for a cause, think to yourself, “What would take someone put on a heavy jacket?” Maybe the person is going outside into very cold weather. Maybe the person works in the penguin pen(企鹅圈养地) at Sea World. Maybe the person is going to visit an ice skating rink where the air is kept very cold. All of these things could be a cause for putting on a heavy jacket.

Now, think about a second example. The effect is a boy named Abi has to go to the head teacher’s office. What are the possible causes? Maybe he bullied(欺负) another student. Maybe he is just being picked up early. Maybe he is being given a prize!

Here is another example for you to think about its cause and effect. Cait, 13, was trying to fall asleep when her 8-year-old brother, Doug, came into her room. He looked around a bit, but seemed really out of it. Then Doug went back into the hallway and stood there looking straight up at the hall light for quite a while. Little brothers can be very strange, but this was really much too strange. Cait’s father appeared and explained that Doug was sleepwalking. What’s the cause end effect, could you tell?

55.According to the second paragraph, which of the following is an effect?

A.Someone puts on a heavy jacket.

B.Someone works in the penguin pen.

C.Someone will go outside into cold weather.

D.Someone will go to visit an ice skating rink.

56.Abi has to go to the head teacher’s office. Which of the following isn’t the possible cause?

A.He bullied another student.               B.He is going shopping.

C.His is being picking up early.               D.He is being given a prize.

57. What was Doug doing when his sister Cait tried to fall asleep?

A.He was going outside.                    B.He was reading a story.

C.He was sleepwalking.                     D.He was looking for his dad.

58. Which of the following is cause and effect?

A.Tony got up and had a glass of water.

B.We came home and found him sleeping.

C.The ball was lost and a window was broken.

D.Tim was late again and his teacher got angry.

D

Dereck Joubert and his wife, Beverly, have made many films about wild animals in Africa. Their films and photographs are very popular and one of the photographs has been on the front cover of a National Geographic magazine.

A working day foe Dereck and Beverly starts very early-at 4:30 in the morning! That's when they get up and start filming. And it's a long day-they often work until 8:30 in the evening. In the winter it's very cold and in the summer it can be 40℃. Dereck always does the filming-Beverly never does that, and she doesn't write. But Dereck never takes photographs or records the sound. They work very well as a team, and they both believe we should shoot animals with cameras-not with guns!

When they have finished filming and taking photographs for the day, they have dinner and Dereck usually writes while Beverly looks at her photographs. At night, they usually sleep in a small tent, but they sometimes sleep in the Land Cruiser-when you're very close to wild animals, it's sometimes safer to sleep in the car.

Dereck and Beverly have also traveled around the world and given talks about their work. Dereck says that animals are not just something to look at-they play an important role. Beverly thinks the wild animals can teach us a lot about ourselves.

  51. Dereck and Beverly start working ______.

  A. at 4:30 in the morning B. at 4:30 in the afternoon

C. at 8:30 in the morning D. at 8:30 in the evening

  52. Dereck and Beverly usually sleep ______ at night.

A. in a car B. in a tent C. in a house D. in a hotel

  53. Beverly thinks the wild animals ______.

  A. are something to look at B. are very popular

  C. play an unimportant role D. can teach us a lot

What do you do if you're stranded(处于困境的)on a lonely island? Surely you need to find a way to get in touch with the outside world. Your best chance of doing this is to draw the attention of a passing plane.

  Body signals(信号)

Pilots from different countries understand body signals if they have the correct training. When you wave your arms up and down in a straight line, it means "yes". When you point downwards and swing your arm from side to side, it means "no". If you want the pilot to know that it's safe to land, push your hands out in front of you and bend(弯曲)your knees. If you want to say that it's not safe to land, put your arms in the air and move them to one side.

  Smoke signals

The smoke from a fire can be seen from far away, so it's a good way to draw attention. If the weather is dry, it isn't hard to start a fire. Remember, however, that fires can be very dangerous if they get out of control. Never light a fire unless you're sure that it can't spread. If the ground is dark, light smoke can be seen more easily. Green grass and leaves produce light smoke.

  Ground-to-air signals

It's a good idea to build some signals, too. Use large pieces of wood to make the symbols(标记). If you can't find any wood, use earth. Some useful symbols are:

F "I need food and water."

  II "I need medicine."

  I "I am badly hurt."

X" I am unable to move from here."

  Pilots' replies

If the pilot lowers the plane's wings from side to side, this means "message received and understood". (At night, the pilot flashes the plane's green lights.) If the pilots flies the plane in a clockwise circle, this means "message received but not understood".(At night, the pilot flashes the plane's red lights.)

However, there is no signal which means "message not received". Why not?

54 Which picture means "it's not safe land"?

  55. What can we learn from the passage?

  A. Swinging your arm from side to side means "yes".

  B. If the ground is dark, light smoke can't be seen.

  C. If you need some medicine, make a symbol "II".

  D. The pilots make replies with a blue light at night.

  56. What is the passage mainly about?

  A. The explanation of building signals on an island.

  B. The importance of making signals on an island.

  C. Ways of sending out signals on a lonely island.

  D. Ways of receiving signals from a lonely island

My summer hols wr CWOT. B4, we usd 2 go 2 NY 2C my bro, his CF & thr 3:-@ kids FTF ILNY, its gr8.

Can you understand this sentence? If you can't, don't feel too bad: neither could the middle school teacher in England who received this as homework. This is Netspeak: the language of computerized communication found on Internet or cellphones. To newcomers, it can look like a completely foreign language. So, what is the "translation" of the sentence above? My summer holidays were a complete waste of time. Before, we used to go to New York to see my brother, his girlfriend, and their three screaming kids face to face. I love New York; it's great.

Schoolteachers and parents say this new form of writing is harming(破坏)the English language. Increasing spelling and grammatical mistakes cxan be seen in students' writing. They fear the language could become corrupted(面目全非的).

Everyone should just relax, say linguists(语言学家). They believe Netspeak is in fact more of a good thing. David Crystal, from the University of Wales, argues that Netspeak and Internet create a new language use and the almost lost art of diary writing has been picked up again. Geoffrey Nunberg, from Stanford University, agrees. "People get better at writing by writing," he says, "Kids who are now doing text messaging, e-mail, and instant messages will write at least as well as, and possibly better than, their parents."

Linguist James Millroy says, for centuries, it is believed without exception that young people are harming the language. And you can bet your bottom dollar that when today's teenagers become tomorrow's parents, they too will think this way. Milroy argues that languages do not and cannot become "corrupted"; they simply change to meet the new needs.

However, Netspeakers do agree that it is important to teach young people how to speak and write Standard English. Cynthia McVey says, "I can understand Netspeak worries teachers and it's important that they get across to their pupils that text messaging is for fun, but that learning to write proper English is a must for their future."

Perhaps we should give teenagers a little more trust anyway. Erin, age 12, says, "I wouldn't use text language in my homework. Texting is just for fun"

  57. What is the main purpose of the first paragraph?

  A. To give an example of a foreign language.

  B. To show an example of creative methods.

  C. To express worries about using Netspeak.

  D. To lead in the topic of Netspeak.

  58. Which of the following is true according to the passage?

  A. Cynthia McVey points out teenagers can deal with Netspeak properly.

  B. Geoffrey Nunberg believes Netspeakers can write Standard English.

  C. David Crystal thinks Netspeak helps develop the habit of writing.

  D. James Milroy says that language is changing and improving.

  59. The expression "bet your bottom dollar" in Paragraph 5 means ______.

  A. be fairly sure B. be greatly surprised

  C. think it a pity D. find it interesting

  60. What can be the best title for the passage?

  A. Netspeak: A Widely-Used Language on Internet

  B. Is Netspeak Harming the English Language?

  C. Is Netspeak Helpful in Language Learning?

  D. Netspeak: Advantages and Disadvantages

We need to be responsible for our environment. Being a frugal consumer(节俭的消费者) is one way to help. But, what exactly does that mean?

  Use It Up

You can use things up instead of wasting them. Squeeze that last bit of toothpaste out of the tube. Use the last little piece of soap. Don't throw away any bits of the biscuit at the bottom of the box.

  Wear It Out

You do not always need to have new things. Suppose your sneakers have broken laces, but they still fit you. Repair them and wear them longer. You don't have the latest iPhone until the old one doesn't work anymore. Then you can get a new one. Think twice before replacing something that still works.

  Make It Do

When something you want is not on hand, look for something else that you already have to take its place. Suppose you are packing your lunch for tomorrow and want a butter sandwich. You are out of butter. Have a cheese sandwich instead so that you can use all of the cheese. Learn to fix broken toys instead of just throwing them away. With a little thought, you can make something do, instead of buying something new.

  Do Without

Think about all those things that you would like to have. Do you really need them? How long will you really play with that new toy you saw on TV? Making the things that we want uses up your world's resources(资源). And, getting rid of the things we don't want any more takes up even more resources and space.

  65. Do we need to be responsible for our environment?

  66. How do we deal with the last little piece of soap?

  67. When do we need to get a new iPhone?

  68. What should we do when something we want is not on hand?

69. What does the writer want to tell us?

Yours,

Alice

Hi! Alice,

I’m glad to hearing from you.____________________________

______________________________________________________

______________________________________________________

______________________________________________________

______________________________________________________

I hope what I said….

Yours,

Liu Ming

Do you have the same problem?" I have the same problem. / I have never met things like this. 而且,来信的第一句话为" I'm so sad.", 所以第一部分内容可以表示安慰 " Don't worry" 或者表示理解对方的感受 "I can understand you."

If it's not a lot of money, you can lend it to her.(如果钱不多的话,可以借给她)

If she wants to borrow a lot of money from you, you'd better suggest her to ask her parents for help.

If you decide to help her, then trust her, because she is your close friend.(如果你决定把钱借给她的话,就要信任她,因为她是你的好朋友。)

Friendship is more important than money, if your close friend needs help, you are supposed to give him / her a hand and trust him / her.

We students don't have jobs to earn money but depend on our parents, when we need some money, it's always a better choice to ask our parents for help instead of turn to our friends. Meanwhile, we should be honest to our parents.

Hi!Alice ,

I'm glad to hear from you.

Yes,I sometimes have the same problem.

I think if she really needs the money, you'd better lend it to her.You don't need to worry too much. She'll probably pay you back when she has money. If you don't lend her the money,I'm afraid you may lose the friend.

I think everyone may have trouble in life and we should help each other. So when my friends need money,I will try my best to help them.Maybe I'll get it back,or maybe I won't.

I hope what I said can help you.

Yours

Here are six steps to smarter studying:

1. Pay attention in class

Do you have trouble paying attention in class? Are you sitting next to a loud person? Tell your teacher or parents about any problems that are preventing you from paying attention.

2. Take good notes

Write down facts that your teacher mentions or write on the board. Try to use good handwriting so you can read your notes later. It’s a good idea to keep your notes organized by subject.

3. Plan ahead for tests and projects

Waiting until Thursday night to study for Friday’s test will make it hard to do your best. One of the best ways to make sure that doesn’t happen is to plan ahead. Write down your test dates. You can then plan how much to do after school each day, and how much time to spend on each topic.

4. Break it up!

When there is a lot to study, it can help to break things into several parts. Let’s say you have a spelling test on 20 words. Instead of thinking about all of the words at once, try breaking them down into five-word groups and work on one or two different groups each night.

5. Ask for help

You can’t study effectively if you don’t understand the material. Be sure to ask your teacher or classmates for help. If you’re at home when confusion occurs, your mom or dad might be able to help.

6. Sleep tight!

So the test is tomorrow and you’ve followed your study plan---but suddenly you can’t remember anything! Don’t panic. Your brain needs time to digest all the information you’ve given it. Try to get a good night’s sleep and you’ll be surprised by what comes back to you in the morning.

26. We know from the passage that a loud person is ________.

A. a person who makes a lot of noise in public places

B. a student who always answers questions loudly in class

C. someone who likes to talk with others in a loud voice

D. a student who has the habit of speaking with others in class

27. According to the author, which of the following is an effective studying method?

A. To read all your notes the night before the test.

B. Try to review what you have learned in one go.

C. Don’t try to review everything you have learned in one go.

D. Try to remember everything on the first try.

28. If you don’t understand what you have learned, you can ________.

A. read your notes over and over again

B. put aside the material for later review

C. turn to people around you for help

D. ask your teacher to explain it the next day

29. By saying “Sleep tight!”, what does the author mean?

A. Get a good night’s sleep .

B. Sleep again after waking up.

C. Sleep holding your pillow tight.

D. Go to sleep early every night.

My parents taught me not to waste food. My mom always found ways to make leftovers( 剩余食物) taste good. I went to Ilan to learn about some of their special foods. As I was there, I learned about the food and the history of the area. I learned that they don’t waste food, either, and they use leftovers!

Many years ago, there was not enough food for everyone. People learned to cook and eat almost everything. They had to think of ways to make special dishes. One of these dishes is kao zha. It’s made with leftovers like meat, soup, oil and fat. That might not sound very good, but it does taste good. Today, kao zha is a special dish at big banquets.(宴会)

Another famous dish is called zao bing. It’s made with fruit, meat and other things. I really liked it! But I didn’t want to eat too much. It has a lot fat in it.

I smelled something burning and I saw smoke, so I found another special food of the Ilan area—duck meat. The duck meat is put in a big oven (炉子)to cook it. Smoke keeps the meat fresh. I don’t usually eat meat, but this duck meat was delicious! It tasted sweet.

Ilan is a great place with delicious food. I hope I can come back again!

33. The writer learns from her parents __________.

A. not to eat leftovers B. to eat good food

C. not to waste food D. to make good food

34. Kao zha is a good dish that made with _________.

A. some different leftovers B. fruit, meat and other things.

36. From the passage, we know that __________.

A. the writer is interested in very big banquets

Saying “cheese” to their own digital cameras is usual for this generation. A little bit of narcissism (自恋) never hurts anyone. It helps them reflect a little on their own lives. But be aware of the risks of posting private photos online.

Text-messaging

One possible version:

How to spend our time properly

Where has our time gone? How should we spend our time properly?

As students, it is important for us to study, so we should make a plan for every day. Most of all, we should listen carefully in class. For homework, we need to make a list and work out how much time we need, and then finish them one by one. Hobbies are also important in our lives and different students have different kinds of hobbies. They can make us feel happy and confident. But we don’t need to spend so much time on them. So we should achieve a balance between our study and our hobbies.

In other ways, we need time, too. For example, we often spend a lot of time talking with our friends at lunchtime and watching TV at the weekends.

If so, I’m sure we will live a happier school life.
