Period 1 Reading-Color Association

Teaching Plan

Theoretical basis

According to the current English Teaching Syllabus, language learning theory and learning by doing theory, the students are the real masters in the class while the teacher acts as a director. I will encourage students to improve their cooperation ability and develop different reading skills.

Analysis of the teaching material

The topic of Unit 4 is colors and mood. The reading passage is Color Association. It talks about color association, especially differernt meanings of different colors. Red, yellow and blue are particularly mentioned in the text. The text is not difficult for students to understand, however, they must work hard to know something valuable such as the importance of the three primary colors.

Analysis of the students

Our students have learnt English for years, they already have certain English knowledge, though they still have some difficulties in expressing themselves in English. What's more, they are interested in new things and have some certain ability of imagination, observation and creation. They are students of English major, and it’s more important for them to grasp different skills in English such as listening, speaking, reading, writing and translating.

Three dimensional teaching aims

1. Knowledge aims:

a.       Students learn some new words and useful expressions:

particularly, association, shape, object, tie, caution, policeman, opposite, blue-chip, be associated with, warn of, etc.

b. Students learn some useful sentence patterns:

Red is used to express a strong feeling like anger.

By association we are able to remember things that happened in the past.

2. Ability aims:

a. Students acquire a good knowledge of colors and their interesting meanings.

b. Students improve their reading ability by using different reading strategies such as skimming and scanning.

c. Students learn to teach by teaching colors to pupils in the teaching situation.

3. Emotional aims:

a. Students become more interested in English learning and teaching.

b. Students may know what red, yellow and blue to colors is just what ABC to English, thus they may hold a good attitude towards English learning and teaching.

c. Students learn to cooperate with each other and have spirit of teamwork.

Teaching important points:

a. Students comprehend the text and grasp the main idea of the text.

b. Students know the detailed information in the text.

Teaching difficult points:

a. Students improve their reading ability and understand the passage better.

b. Students learn to teach pupils in the teaching situation.

Step 1 Lead-in

A student try to teach the pupils colors, which is the homework of last class. Other students act as pupils to cooperate with the student.

Aims: Students may have a chance to teach in the class and lead in the new class naturally.

Step 2 Warming-up

Have free talks with students.

What color will you choose to teach the pupils?

What’s your favorite color ? Why?

Aims: Students may have a chance to speak Enlish and improve their speaking skills. Students become familiar with the topic.

Step 3 Reading

1.      Listening

listen to get the main idea of the text.

What does the text mainly talk about?

(It talks about color association, especially different meanings of different colors.)

Aims: Students improve their listening ablity and know the main idea of the text.

2.      Skimming

Knowledge about reading

1.Read fast to get main idea;

2.Do not read word by word;

Aim: Help the students read the text more efficiently.

Skim the passage to do the text analysis.

Divide the text into three parts and match the main idea to each part..

Part 1 (para. 1) The function of the association

Part 2 (para. 2 & 3 &4) The definition of the association.

Part 3 (para. 5 ) Examples of color associationsuch as red ,yellow and blue.

Aims: Students have a general idea of the text and train their skimming skill.

2. Scanning

Knowledge about reading

Read carefully for detailed information, that is to look at every part of something carefully, especially because you are looking for a particular thing.

Aim: Students may know how to scan the text and grasp the reading skill.

Scan the text and find the answers to the following questions according to the text.

1. What does association mean?

2.What feeling is red color associated with?

3. What does a yellow ribbon mean in America?

4. What do we say when someone is sad?

5. How useful is association for us?

Show the students some key words to help them answer the questions.

Suggested answers:

1.      An association is the mental connection we make between two things or ideas.

2.      Red is used to express a strong feeling like anger.

3.      In America, a yellow ribbon is usually pinned on the door or tied on the tree to welcome their loved one to come back home.

4.      We usually say, He is feeling blue.

5.      By association we are able to remember things that happened in the past.

Aims: Students understand the passage in detail and learn the scanning skill.

3.      Competitions

Competion 1.

Read aloud to prepare for the competion.

Knowledge about readig

Read loudly for further understanding and pay attention to the important words and expressions. Pronunciation, intonation, and pauses are also very important when reading aloud.

Aim: Students know what to read when reading loudly and learn different reading skills..

There are six colors on the screen and behind each color there will be a question. Students can choose a color to get the question to answer. They can get one point if the answer is write.

You also have a chance to ask other groups a question and you can get one more point.

Task2. Discussion

Red ,yellow and blue to colors is what ABC to English.

Enjoy a vedio of colors and discuss your understanding of ABC.

Optional(选做):

Surf the Internet to learn more about color association.

Aims: To consolidate what we learnt today and try to learn by themselves. Students may know somehting about Enlish teaching in primary schools.

4. Cooperate with each other and share ideas and information.

Aims: Students may know exactly what we learnt today. Most students can do it, thus they may become more confident in Englishi learning.

Afterthoughts

Basing on the learning condition of normal school students, I mainly adopted the task-based language teaching. Most students took part in the activites and improved their reading ability. Also their listening, speaking and writing ability have been improved in our class. What’s more, students know something about Enlish teaching in primary schools after this class. However, it’s still difficult for some students to write their teaching plan and to teach real pupils. I will offer them more chances to practice in later teaching periods
