Passage 2

Most parentsI supposehave had the experience of reading a bedtime story to their childrenAnd they must have 1 how difficult it is to write a 2 children's bookEither the author has aimed too 3 so that the children can't follow what is in his or more oftenherstory 4 the story seems to be talking to the readers

The best children's books are 5 very difficult nor very simpleand satisfy both the 6 who hears the story and the adult who 7 itUnfortunatelythere are in fact 8 books like this 9 the problem of finding the right bedtime story is not 10 to solve

This may be why many of books regarded as 11 of children's literature were in fact written for 12 “Alice's Adventure in Wonderland” is perhaps the most 13 of this

Childrenleft for themselvesoften 14 the worst possible interest in literatureJust leave a child in bookshop or 15 and he will 16 willingly choose the books written in an imaginative wayor have a look at most children's comicsfull of the stories and jokes which are the 17 of teachers and right-thinking parents

Perhaps we parents should stop trying to brainwash children into 18 our taste in literatureAfter all children and adults are so 19 that we parents should not expect that they will enjoy the 20 booksSo I suppose we'll just have to compromise over that bedtime story

Passage 1

On my voyage to JapanI shared a cabin with MrKeladaHe was chatty and seemed too sure of himself

One evening at dinner the passengers started talking about culture pearls(人工养殖珍珠)the Japanese were makingMrKelada rushed the new topic

“I'm going to Japan just to look into the Japanese pearl businessI'm in the trade and I know all the best pearls in the worldThey'll never be able to get a culture pearl that an expert like me can't tell with half an eye” He pointed to the chain that MrsRamsay wore“You take my word for itMrsRamsaythat chain you're wearing will never be worth a cent less than it is now

MrsRamsay in her modest way flushed(脸红)a little and slipped the chain inside her dressMrRamsay leaned forwardHe gave us all a lookand a smile shone in his eyes

“That's a pretty chainisn't it

“I noticed it at once” answered MrKelada“GeeI said to myselfthose are pearls all right

“I didn't buy it myselfof courseI'd be interested to know how much you think it cost

“Ohin the trade somewhere round fifteen thousand dollarsBut if it was bought on Fifth Avenue I shouldn't be surprised to hear that anything up to thirty thousand was paid for it

MrRamsay smiled grimly

“You'll be surprised to hear that MrsRamsay bought that string at a department store the day before we left New Yorkfor eighteen dollars

MrKelada flushed

“NonsenseIt's not only realbut it's as fine a string for its size as I've ever seen

“Will you bet(打赌)on itI'll bet you a hundred dollars that it's imitation

“Done

“OhElmeryou can't bet on a certainty” said MrsRamsay

She had a little smile on her lipsand her tone was gently showing strong disagreement

“Can't I? If I get a chance of earn money like that I should be all sorts of a fool not to take it

“But how can it be proved” she continued“It's only my word against MrKelada's”

“Let me look at the chainand if it's imitationI'll tell you quickly enoughI can afford to lose a hundred dollars” said MrKelada

“Take it offdearLet the gentleman look at it as much as he wants

MrsRamsay hesitated a momentShe put her hands to the clasp(项链扣).

“I can't undo it” she said“MrKelada will just have to take my word for it

I had a sudden suspicion that something unfortunate was about to occurbut I could think of nothing to say

MrRamsay jumped up

“I'll undo it

He handed the chain to MrKeladaThe man took a magnifying glass from his pocket and closely examined itA smile of triumph spread over his smooth and rather dark-coloured faceHe handed back the chainHe was about to speakSuddenly he caught sight of MrsRamsay's faceIt was so white that she looked as though she were about to faintShe was staring at him with wide and terrified eyesThey held a desperate appeal(恳求);it was so clear that I wondered why her husband did not see it

MrKelada stopped with his mouth openHe flushed deeplyYou could almost see the effort he was making over himself
