Mike the Headless Chicken Festival

Earlier this year I traveled to Turkana in Kenya. I was there to take pictures of the “broken food system”.

As a special visitor, I was greeted with songs and dances. The locals used to sing and dance all the time but now Turkana is silent and has been for some years. No one is singing or dancing anymore because they have no food, nothing to celebrate. Many of them are surviving on one handful of corn a day and water, which they can get just every two days.

I met Tede Lokapelo, a local farmer who described the experience of a six-year drought (干旱). Tede used to have 200 goats, but now he has only seven left. He told me that this drought has taught him a hard lesson: it is too difficult to keep animals. He lives on animals. His traditional way of life has been completely destroyed now. Without the food aid they got, Tede is certain that they would starve because there are no other sources to feed themselves left.

Sadly, the same can be heard in almost any developing country around the world. Almost one billion people go to bed hungry each night. The food system is broken. In Turkana, not enough rain has fallen since 2005. They measure rainfall not in days or weeks but in minutes. More and more people are being forced to rely on food aid, but people like Tede don’t want food aid. They want to work and create their own economy. It’s our responsibility to fix the system so that they can support themselves.

Drought is impossible to avoid but hunger is manmade, and unless enough money is provided to develop a basic infrastructure (基础设施) for people in the area, thousands more lives are sure to be lost.

Have you seen a picture of George Washington lately? Take a look at a dollar or check out a book on Washington from the library. You probably won’t find any pictures of him smiling.

Did the painter forget to tell the President to say “cheese”? Actually, Washington began losing his teeth at age 22 and was entirely toothless by age 64. Most of his pictures were painted while he wore dentures (假牙). His various sets of dentures were made from both animal and human teeth. These teeth were held together with springs(弹簧) so powerful that George’s jaws (颚) had to work hard to keep the upper and lower parts together. If he relaxed, his mouth would open! This may be the reason why Washington always looks so stern in his pictures.

Washington lived in the 1700s, a time when people didn’t take care of their teeth the way we do today. They didn’t have toothpaste with fluoride (a chemical that prevents teeth from becoming bad). Most people used powdered chalk to clean their teeth. Some people had toothbrushes made of animal hairs with wood or metal handles.

Back then, people didn’t visit the dentist every six months for a checkup and cleaning. George’s dentist, John Greenwood, lived and worked in New York. Washington regularly mailed his dentures to Greenwood so they could be repaired. Otherwise, he would see his dentist only to have teeth taken out because they caused him pain. During the American Revolutionary War, General Washington’s teeth bothered him so much that he sent for the French dentist La Mayeur.

Today we don’t have to suffer like George did. So the next time someone takes your picture, show off your teeth and say cheese!

On January 13, 2016, France became the first country in the world to pass a law requiring supermarkets to donate food that is approaching its expiration date (保质期) instead of throwing it away. The regulation that applies to supermarkets over 4,000 square feet requires stores to sign official donation agreements with local food banks.

The law also makes it illegal for stores to pour water over nearly-expired food, or store it inside locked warehouses until it is picked up by the garbage trucks. These measures are often undertaken by supermarkets to prevent the hungry from searching for food through the dustbins.

Though that may appear cruel, the stores claim they do it to avoid potential food poisoning that could occur if the product is way past its expiry. Those that do not obey the new law face the risk of heavy fines.

Also, excess goods like yogurt or milk that are likely to go bad quickly are now allowed to be donated directly to the food banks. Though this has always been possible, the current process is long and complex, making it difficult for producers to give away the food in a timely manner.

France’s food banks are of course thrilled about the possibility of receiving extra food. Jacques Bailet, who heads a network of French food banks called the Banques Alimentaires, says that of the 110,000 tons of goods received annually, only 36,000 tons comes from supermarkets. Bailet estimates (估计) that just a 15% increase in supermarket donations would translate to over 10 million additional meals to feed the hungry each year.

Though this is a great first step, Arash Dermabarsh, the activist responsible for the grassroots movement that led to the ban, is not done. He now wants to extend (延伸) the law to other places like restaurants and also try to convince other countries in the European Union to pass similar regulations. These steps are necessary because of the over 9 million tons of food wasted in France; an astonishing 67% is thrown away by consumers, with supermarkets and restaurants making up the rest.
