阅读下面短文, 从短文后所给各题的四个选项(ABCD)中,选出可以填入空白的最佳选项。

What are the basic elements(要素) of good manners? Certainly a strong sense of justice is one; courtesy(谦恭) is often 36 more than a highly developed sense of fair play. A friend of mine once told me about a time he was 37 along a narrow, unpaved(未铺柏油的) mountain road. 38 was another car that produced clouds of 39 , and it was a long way to the nearest 40 highway. Suddenly, at a 41 place, the car ahead pulled off the road. 42 that its owner might have engine trouble, my friend stopped and asked if anything was wrong. “ 43 ,”said the other driver, “but you’ve endured(忍受) my dust this far; I’ll 44 with yours the rest of the way.”

Another element of courtesy is empathy(善解人意), a 45 that enables a person to see into the mind or heart of someone else, to understand the pain or 46 there and to do something to minimize it. A man 47 alone in a restaurant was trying to open the cap of a beer bottle, 48 he couldn’t do it because of badly injured 49 . He asked a young busboy to help him. The boy took the bottle, turned his back 50 and loosened the cap without difficulty. Then he 51 it again. Turning back to the man, he 52 to make great efforts to open the bottle without success. 53 he took it into the kitchen and returned shortly, saying that he had managed to loosen it ----but only with a pair of pliers(钳子).

Yet another element of politeness is the ability to treat all people 54 , in spite of all status or importance. 55 when you have doubts about some people, act as if they are worthy of your best manners. You may also be astonished to find out what they really are.

Courtesy is the key to a happier world.

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项ABCD中选出最佳选项。

A

Have you ever heard the saying, “An elephant never forgets?” I do not know whether it is true or not, but I do think that elephants are certainly very clever. They can be taught to do things. That is really interesting.

Once upon a time there was an elephant near a town in India. The elephant went to work with its master every day. It had to go along a certain street. A tailor lived in this street, and used to sit at the door of his shop. Every day when the elephant came to this shop, it would stop and put out its trunk towards the tailor. This was because it knew that the tailor was a friendly man. He would give it something nice to eat.

One day it happened that the tailor had nothing to give to his big friend. Perhaps he wanted to make fun of it, because he was not an unkind man. What did he do? When the elephant put out its trunk to the tailor, he pricked (刺穿) the end of the trunk with a needle. The elephant drew back quickly, looked at him angrily and went off down the road.

The tailor thought no more about it during the day, but the elephant did! That evening before it went home the elephant filled its trunk with water from a dirty pond. When the tailor saw it coming along the road, he laughed at the trick that he had played on the beast that morning. But he became very sad when he received a trunkful of dirty water between the eyes!

Because it wanted __________.

A. to drink B. to wash its trunk

American doctors say that mothers who smoke cigarettes before their babies are born may slow the growth of their babies’ lungs. They say reduced lung growth could cause the babies to suffer breathing problems and lung diseases later in life. Doctors in Boston, Massachusetts studied 1,000 children. The mothers of some of the children smoked, while the other mothers did not. Doctors found that the lungs of the children whose mothers smoked were 8% less developed than the lungs of the children whose mothers did not smoke, and that the children whose mothers smoked had 25% more cold and breathing diseases than other children later in life.

Another recent study found that children had a greater chance of having lung cancer if their mothers smoked. The study also showed that the danger of cancer increased only for sons and not for daughters, and that the father’s smoking did not affect a child’s chance of suffering from lung cancer.

In Kenya, educational and career opportunities are almost non-existent for people born with physical challenges. They face many forms of discrimination — including beliefs that their condition was caused by a curse. But one father whose son Brain was born deaf, mute and blind aims to change all that. Joseph Shiroko started a school four years ago that teaches students who can not hear, speak and who have very low or no vision a wide range of skills to support themselves.

The baby clothes the students knit(编织) are well known in the local community. And the school has developed a reputation for its dried smoked meat products.

Brain Resource Center, a boarding school, teaches deaf and blind young Kenyans from across the country a variety of skills they can use to earn a living.

“We have a number of philosophies that inform what we are doing: accepting these people; loving them; giving them opportunities.” said founder Joseph Shiroko.

Teachers, most of whom are graduates from the school or are themselves physically challenged, work with students.

Mary Kerubo, 22, has a passion for knitting sweaters, which she plans to continue in her village.

“I feel comfortable here because Sween — my teacher understands me,” said Kerubo. “Even if I do not see well, she always repeats her lessons again and again so that I may understand how to make sweaters. I know I will make it.”

Kerubo’s teacher, Sween Lyaka, was among the first graduates of Brain Resource Center four years ago. She says her students have a lot of unrecognized potential.

Sween says in the future, she plans to purchase four sewing machines that she will use to teach students and produce and sell sweaters in her home village.

The center also works with students’ families to set up projects that will continue after the students graduate.

Founder Joseph Shiroko’s son, Brain, was the inspiration behind Brain Resource Center. The senior Shiroko says he began the school initially as a project to teach Brain bakery skills. The family later expanded Brain’s training and brought in other young people with similar physical conditions.

64. What’s the function of the first paragraph?

A. Attract the reader’s attention. B. Lead us to the topic.

C. Tell us important news. D. Warn us of a serious problem.

65. The founder Joseph Shiroko treats children with physical problems except ______.

A. loving them B. accepting them

C. ignoring them D. giving them opportunities

66. According to the passage, we know _________.

A. the teachers in Brian Resource Center are healthy and normal

B. the teachers merely help students who can’t hear or speak in Resource centre

C. Kerubo was among the first graduates of Brian Resource Centre

D. Joseph’s son gave Joseph the inspiration to found Brian Resource Centre

67. What’s the main idea of the passage?

A. There are non-existent opportunities for the disabled in Kenya.

B. Joseph Shiroko started a new school four years ago.

C. Brian Resource Centre teaches the disabled skills to support themselves.

D. The baby clothes the disabled students knit are well-known in Kenya.

Archaeologists have discovered 45 ancient Egyptian tombs in Lahoun, Egypt. The site is about 70 miles south of Cairo, Egypt’s capital. In most of the tombs they found a decorated painted wooden coffin. Each one captains a mummy (木乃伊). In one tomb, 12 coffins from around 1500 B.C. were found piled on top of one another, so the actual number of mummies comes to 57.

The oldest tombs that were discovered date back to around 2750 BC. The discovery will give scientists more information about Egypt’s ancient religions.

Egypt’s archaeology chief, Zahi Hawass, said many of the mummies were covered in cloth with drawings of ancient Egyptian gods. The cloth is also decorated with texts from the Book of the Dead and scenes featuring ancient Egyptian gods. The book contains instructions and information that ancient Egyptians thought would help dead people deal with difficulties that they would come across in the afterlife.

Abdel Rahman El-Aydi is the head of the archaeological team that made the discovery. He said some of the tombs were decorated with religious texts. The ancient Egyptians believed these texts, like the Book of the Dead, would help the dead person to cross through the underworld.

The recent discovery of the 45 tombs isn’t the first in Lahoun. Last year, some 53 stone tombs dating back to various ancient periods were found in the same area.

68. The discovery of these tombs will let scientists _____________.

A. know the exact number of mummies in Egypt

B. know what the Book of the Dead contains

C. know how mummies were decorated

D. know more about Egypt’s ancient religions

69. How many tombs have been discovered in the same area in the past two years?

A. 45. B. 98. C. 70. D. 57.

70. According to the passage, we can infer ___________.

A. a large number of tombs were discovered only in Lahoun

B. the cloth covering mummies is decorated with beautiful patterns

C. Egyptians believed in ancient Egyptian Gods, who’d help them through the underworld

D. the oldest and largest tombs were discovered in Lahoun

第二节:(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

We can read of things that happened 5.000 years ago in the Near East, where people first learned to write. 71 The only way that they can preserve their history is to recount it as sagas ---- 72 These legends are useful because they can tell us something about migrations of people who lived long ago, but none could write down what they did. Anthropologists(人类学家) wondered where the remote ancestors of the Polynesian peoples now living in the Pacific Islands came from. 73

But the first people who were like ourselves lived so long ago that even their sagas, if they had any, are forgotten. 74

Fortunately, however, ancient men made tools of stone, because this is easier to shape than other kinds. 75 Stone does not decay, and so the tools of long ago have remained when even the bones of the men who made them have disappeared without trace.

A. They may also have used wood and skins, but these have rotted away.

B. descriptions of what important events happened in ancient times.

C. But there are some parts of the world where even now people can’t write.

D. legends handed down from one generation of story-tellers to another.

E. So scientists have neither history nor legends to help them to find out where the first “modern men” came from.

F. But there is some doubt who began to write.

G. The sagas of these people explain that some of them came from Indonesia about 2,000 years ago.

In recent years many flowers shops have been appeared in our small town. It is common for people to buy flowers when they go to a gathering, visiting a sick friend, or attend a wedding or birthday party. I still remember clear one day last year when Tom, a disabled student, presented some flowers to his mother to express his gratitude for her. He owing his entire life to his mother’s kind and care. 作文

Dear David,

I’m glad that you’ve noticed our efforts directed towards environmental protection. Thank you for your concern.

As too much use of plastic bags has caused serious white pollution, our government encourages us to use environment-friendly shopping bags. These bags are made of a variety of materials that can be easily treated when they become rubbish. Besides, they can be reused. More and more people in China have realized the advantages of such bags and started using them.

I believe that the wide use of these shopping bags can greatly improve our environment. This is one of the many steps we are to make our country an even cleaner place.

Yours, Li Hua
