Lately,withTSAregulationsseeminglychangingdaily,packingmykitbagwithclothes,toothbrushandZiploc-baggieofthree-ouncebottlesseemsmoreliketroublethanfun,fun,fun.Formyfriend,Vikki,though,whattopackisn'tasimportantaswhomtopack.Shetakesherfamilyandfriendseverywhere.VikkitookhermotherskiinginMammothlastNovemberandshetookmymother-in-lawtotheruinsofMachuPicchuandRome.VikkihastakennumerouspeopletoexoticplacesliketheoutbackinAustralia,andtheGreekIslands—allposthumouslyandinherbag.Yousee,Vikkicollectsprayercardsfromfuneralsandmemorialsofherlovedonesandtakesthemwithherwherevershegoes.Thecards,somewithwatercolorimagesofJesusandotherswithpicturesofadeceasedfriendand“inlovingmemory”printedbeneath,areboundtogetherwitharubberbandandstashed

somewhereinVikki’scarry-on.I'mfascinatedbythispracticeandaskheraboutitoften.Iliketokeeptabsonthenumberofcardsshecarriesasitincreases.AtlastcountVikkiwastotingaroundfortypeople.I’veoftenthoughtthatwhenthetallyreachedfifty-two,I’dproposesomekindofcardgamewecouldplay.Myhusband,LarryandIsometimestravelwithVikkiandherhusband,Bill,sowecouldwhileawaythehoursontrainsandboatsbyplayingsomemodifiedversionofwar,poker,orgo-fish.Obviously,I’mnotassentimentalaboutVikki’scollectionassheis,butonatriptwoyearsago,Iwitnessedthepowerofthoseprayercards.LarryandIwereinPeruwithVikkiandBill.WehadjustfinisheddinneratarestaurantinAguasCalientes,whenVikkislidasmallcardacrossthetabletoLarryandasked,“WouldyouliketohaveyourmomwithyoutomorrowwhenyouclimbMachuPicchu?”Larrywasvisiblymovedbythegestureandslippedtheprayercardfromhismother’sfuneralintohisshirtpocket.Whenwewalkedtheancient,Incanruinsthenextday,LarryhadhismomwithhimandIcouldsensethejoyhefeltinherpresence.ItwasthenIrealizedtheenormoushappinessVikkimustfeel,havingsomefortylovedonesnearheratalltimes.Withalltherulestodayaboutwhattravelerscan’tbringonaflight,maybe
