The strong protests against constant testing are a reaction mainly against the mindless test-prep(针对训练) associated with reading tests. Math tests, which are based on an actual curriculum, aren’t the main issue. Prepping for them usually helps improve math proficiency. But prepping for reading tests have had only a short-tem effect, and hasn’t helped reading ability in the long run.

If you look at recent scores on the National Assessment of Educational Progress, you will see that there’s a gentle boost in reading scores for grades 4 and 8, but not for 17 years olds. The reading proficiency of high school seniors had not been changed since the great verbal decline of the 1970s, which was well documented by drops in scores on the SAT. So, why haven’t the short-term early boots in grades 4 and 8 translated into better verbal scores in grade 12? Reading tests in later grades are more knowledge-intensive than the tests in the early grades. Scholars of the subject showed that 12th-grade scores declined in the 1970s and stayed flat, because of a narrowing of the school curriculum.

The time-consuming test preparations with endless exercises on finding the main idea and questioning the author have become the main cause of today’s curriculum narrowing. Emphasis on reading and reading tests have helped to cause low reading scores among senior students. The underlying reasons for this paradox(悖论) are not widely understood among test makers and other specialists: Prepping for reading tests has had a negative effect on the curriculum, because the tests themselves, not to mention the strategy exercises, are based on an incorrect understanding of reading ability.

Reading ability is very topic independent. How well students perform on a reading test is highly dependent on their knowledge of the topics of the test passages. Yet the topics on our current reading tests don’t have anything to do with the topics studied in school. Worse, there’s no short-term way of preparing for a general reading test other than by doing topic-indifferent skill-exercises. It involves teaching students how to figure out the meaning of a test passage, even when they know little about the topic. This kind of unproductive and boring test-prep ceases to have an effect.

That’s why reading scores were higher when schooling was more knowledge-intensive. A knowledge-oriented curriculum will, over time, produce higher verbal abilities than a test-prep curriculum. Over 13 years of knowledge-intensive schooling, students, including disadvantages ones, can learn quite a lot about a lot of topics, greatly increasing their ability to make high scores on a reading test.

58. According to Paragraph 1, constant reading tests are receiving strong protests probably because ________.

A. they are a reaction against the mindless test-prep related to reading tests

B. Math tests which are based on an actual curriculum aren’t the main issue

C. prepping for them hasn’t boosted high school seniors’ reading proficiency

D. prepping for them fails to produce any effect for students’ reading skills

59. Emphasis on reading had contributed to low scores in higher grades because____.

A. the test-prep associated with reading tests is too time-consuming

B. there’s no short-term way of preparing for a general reading test

C. the prepping for reading tests is unproductive and boring

D. test experts fail to understand reading proficiency correctly

60. The suitable title for this text could be ________.

A. Strong Protest Against Constant Testing

B. Reading Ability is Very Topic Dependent

C. A Paradox of Emphasis on Reading and Low Scores

D. Why Reading Test Scores Flatten Out in 12th Grade

C

Concussions are brain injuries that occur when a person receives a blow to the head, face, or neck. Although most people may feel dizzy, sick and sleepy at first, these symptoms often disappear after a few days. The long-term effects of concussions, however, are less understood and far more severe. Recent studies suggest that people who suffer multiple concussions are at a significant risk for developing chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a brain disorder that causes a variety of dangerous mental and emotional problems to arise weeks, months, or even years after the initial injury. These psychological problems can include depression, anxiety, memory loss, inability to concentrate, and physical aggression. The majority of people who develop these problems are athletes who participate in popular high-impact sports, especially football. Although both new sports regulations and improvements in helmet technology can help protect players, the media and fans alike bear some of the responsibility for reducing the incidence of these destructive injuries.

Improvements in diagnostic technology have provided a lot of evidence to link severe-and often fatal-psychological disorders to the head injuries players receive on the field. In response to the growing understanding of this danger, the National Football League (NFL) has revised its safety regulations. Players who have suffered a head injury on the field must give a concussion sideline assessment – a series of mental and physical fitness tests-before being allowed back to the game. In an effort to reduce the amount of head and neck injuries on the field, NFL officials have begun enforcing stricter penalty calls for helmet-to-helmet contact, leading with the head, and hitting a defenseless player. Furthermore, as of 2010, if a player’s helmet is accidentally pulled off his head during a game, the ball is immediately whistled dead. There is hope that these new regulations, coupled with advances in helmet design, will reduce the number of concussions players suffer, thus controlling the number of CTE cases.

Efforts by the NFL and other professional sports leagues are certainly praiseworthy; indeed, we should commend every attempt to protect the mental and physical health of players. However, new regulations at the professional level cannot protect amateur players, especially young people. With appropriate equipment and form, tackling (擒抱) need not be dangerous. Proper tackling form—using the arms and shoulders to aim for a player’s midsection(中间部分) rather than leading with the top of the head—should be taught at an early age. Youth, high school, and college leagues should also adopt safety rules even stricter than the NFL’s. Furthermore, at an early age, athletes should be educated about the serious dangers of head injuries.

Perhaps the most important factor in reducing the number of brain injuries, however, lies not with the players, the coaches, or the administrators, but with the media and fans. Sports media producers have been used to showing the most aggressive tackles and the most intense plays. NFL broadcasts often replay especially violent collisions, while the commentators admire the physical ability of the players involved. Some sports programs even feature the countdowns of the hardest hit. When the media focuses on such dangerous behavior, professionals are rewarded for injuring each other on the field, and amateurs become more likely to try to imitate their favorite NFL athlete. Announcers, commentator, television producers, and sportswriters should engage in a collective effort to stop glorifying violent plays. In turn, fans should stop expecting their favorite players to put their lives online for the purposes of entertainment. Players must stop being encouraged to trade their careers, health, happiness, and their lives for the sake of a game.

61. According to the passage, the author believes that _________.

A. NFL officials have not completely carried out safety regulations

B. sports fans and the media share some of the blame for athletes’ injuries

C. parents should warn their young children about the danger of playing football

D. doctors need to do more research about the long-term effects of CTE

A. There is a close link between CTE and head injuries.

B. NFL officials have done a lot to address the problem of CTE.

C. Safety regulations should be strictly observed by football players.

D. Concussion sidelines assessments play an important role in protecting players.

63. The underlying word amateur in Paragraph 3 is closest in meaning to ______.

A. inexpert B. aggressive C. enthusiastic D. strong

64. The author’s tone in the passage can best be described as ________.

A. apologetic B. confused C. concerned D. hopeless

D

The stories of Dickens would not have been possible without the steam engine and the industrial revolution it brought about. For that matter, neither would the stories of people like Vanderbilt or Carnegie. And what would the 20th century have been like without the internal combustion engine and electricity?

Yet we often miss the fact that stories drive technology as well. Steve Jobs, quite famously but not uniquely, believed that the humanities and technology are deeply intertwined(纠缠) and the power of story has a lot to do with it. Technology, after all, doesn’t live in a vacuum(真空)but co-evolves with mankind. Technology, when properly understood, is far more than a collection of soulless artifacts(人工制品).

World War II made clear the destructive potential of technology. As deadly machines ravaged Europe and bombs of unimaginable power exploded in Asia, the whole planet was involved in a whirlpool (漩涡)of human design. It seemed that the technology we had built had become a global version of the Frankenstein monster, ready and able to turn on its master.

Yet the German philosopher Martin Heidegger saw things differently. In his 1954 essay, The Question Concerning Technology he described technology as similar to art, in that it reveals truths about the nature of the world, brings them forth and puts them to some specific use. In the process, human nature and its capacity for good and evil is also revealed.

The story of Steve Jobs cannot be separated from that of the iPhone, but countless others as well. There are, for instance, the stories of Maxwell and Faraday, who revealed the forces of electricity and that of Claude Shannon who uncovered the nature of information. There is also von Neumann, Shockley and on and on. Far too many stories to tell here.

Of course, you don’t need to know these stories to use an iPhone. But as you can find your way through the maze of stories embedded in an iPhone, you gain new appreciation and begin to see new possibilities. It is through learning the stories of technology that new chapters are written.

While the iPhone tells stories of things that have already happened, other types of stories represent theories of the case that can change the future. As an expert, James Allison was fascinated by the story of how our immune system fights infection and spent his career learning its nuances(细微差别). Yet he also imagined possibilities to write new chapters.

It seemed to him that if there are molecules that trigger the immune response to switch on, there might also be others that switch it off. If so, he reasoned, it was possible that cancer cells were shutting off the immune response, making our bodies incapable of fighting them. Allison had lost many family members to cancer, so this story was an intensely personal one.

Allison found the hero of his story when French researchers discovered a protein receptor (蛋白受体)on the surface of T-cells called CTLA-4, which Allison soon found out was the off switch he was looking for. He used the story to devise a strategy called checkpoint blockade that has become one of the most promising forms of cancer immunotherapy.

We can further understand the relationship between technology and story. To build for the world you must first understand what it means to live in it. Stories are how we make sense of what we come across in the world.

And that, I think, gets to the heart of the matter. Technology, when properly understood, is far more than the product of algorithms, microscopes, test tubes and other apparatus, but the revealing of truths in the service of human life. And so, the efforts can only reach its highest level with humans—and their stories—at its center.

That is the true story of technology.

65. It is implied in the first paragraph that________.

B. has really become a monster against its master

C. proved its destructive potential in World War II

A. Steve Jobs played an important role in inventing the iPhone

B. there are rich stories about humans in technology

C. the iPhone is representative of modern technology

D. you can’t appreciate the iPhone without knowing all its stories

A. He dreamed of using the immune system to fight infection.

B. He intended to find the Off Switch cancer cells.

C. He thought about finding a possible cure for cancer.

D. He imagined writing a new story about cancer patients.

69. Allison’s checkpoint blockade suggests that ________.

A. his family members helped him to find the Off Switch

B. scientific researchers can be heroes in a story

C. cancer is no longer a serious disease for mankind

D. it is a great advance in the treatment of cancer

70. In the opinion of the author, the true story of technology is that ________.

请认真阅读下面短文,并根据所读内容在文章后表格中的空格里填入最适当的单词。注意:每空一个单词。

Effective communication is a sign of strong and stable families while poor communication often causes families difficulties and conflicts, according to Virginia Tech. Understanding the features and the benefits of good family communication helps ensure positive and healthy relationships among family members.

Virginia Tech sees the clear family communication as clear direct and clear indirect communication. The former, the healthiest form of family communication, occurs when you clearly express a message to the correct family member. The latter refers to a message stated understandably but without a good indication of whom the message refers to.

Good listening is of great importance in family communication and it shows that you care and that you are concerned with the message being conveyed. At the same time, you should make constant eye contact and provide verbal feedback, such as I see. Rephrasing improves understanding and reduces confusion. To rephrase a message, you must listen carefully to the message, restate the message without adding extra information and check with the speaker to ensure the correct understanding. Probing refers to asking questions or making statements to identify the aspects of the message and reflect on the feelings it conveys. Positive speaking requires you to focus on positive things and be willing to share more information related to the topic. This gives you the chance to express yourself, helps family members build positive self-images, and encourages cooperation.

Good family communication develops good relationships and leads to a better understanding, which help reduce anger and stress. Additionally, according to the University of Delaware, good family communication helps resolve conflicts within the family. Good communication also helps families stay strong by recognizing the need for compromise.

There are some practical tips on improving the communication between the family members.

In order to increase availability, set aside a few minutes every day to connect with your family members and discuss your days and anything disturbing you.

Being empathetic (感情移入的) means listening to the feelings of family members and showing your understanding.

Let the communication in the family be more than just verbal expression. Even the presence of family members can communicate a lot. For example, the presence of parents conveys the messages of safety, love and concern for the children. Use body language and gestures of affection generously in the communication. Even when you criticize or correct a child, holding him and talking to him in the most pleasing manner may help the messages to be accepted in the desired manner. Remember a kiss or a hug can tell more than words can do.

六、书面表达 (满分25)

One possible version:

There exists a barrier to effective communication between some parents and their children. Both parents and children feel its bad influence, which can be seen from the three passages and the picture.

Why is communication a problem in many families nowadays? Children begin preschool at an early age. Many parents work at jobs far away from home. When they come back home, during the little time parents and children are together, communication competes with and often loses out to computers, television, and other electronic devices. In many cases, children and parents live separate lives; they are virtue strangers. Meaningful conversation may be almost nonexistent.

Effective communication requires messages to be conveyed clearly between communicators. To achieve this, parents and children should be patient, making themselves approachable, and easy to talk to. Don’t be discouraged if the communication in your family isn’t as open as you’d like it to be. Remember love result in good communication.

M: What can I do for you, Madam?

W: I’m going to the university to see my daughter, but I don’t know the way now.

M: Oh, go across the street and take a No. 9 bus. It will take you right there.

Text 2

M: Can you guess who wins the Best Actress award at the 30th Hong Kong Film Awards?

W: Carina Lau?

M: You’ve hit it. Amazing! How did you manage that?

W: I’ve read the news.

Text 3

W: Why didn’t you attend Jenny’s birthday last Saturday?

M: I feel really sorry, but a friend of mine came from my hometown to see me.

W: So, you had to stay with him.

M: Yes. And I phoned her and explained it to her.

Text 4

W: Bob, I want to buy something online, but I’m a bit worried. Do you really think it’s safe?

M: For the most part, it’s safe. There are people who try to steal money, but most of the sites are

safe.

Text 5

M: Your daughter has won the first prize in the contest? How old is she, Mary?

W: Just 13.

M: Really? Two years older than my son.

Text 6

W: Did you go to the film yesterday evening?

M: Yes, but it was too noisy, so I didn’t finish watching it.

W: Neither did I. I was always wondering why the children were so excited that they were talking

loudly from the beginning to the end.

M: What was worse, they ate snacks and threw rubbish everywhere.

W: I’m afraid that their parents should be blamed.

Text 7

W: Aha, what a good job waiting for me!

M: Are you smiling to yourself? You have found the right job?

W: Sure, Prince William and his new wife Kate are advertising for servants.

M: To help them with their housework, right?

W: Right, their day-to-day life, including everything.

M: They only need one servant?

W: God, we have just one Prince William in Britain.

M: And there are only three princes in Britain now, I know that.

W: You know they have so many important things to do every day.

M: You mean they will find a team of servants?

W: At least four to help them when they are staying at their new London apartment!

M: You will have a try?

W: Absolutely, you know I love Kate better than myself.

Text 8

W: Hello, Jim. I’m a journalist from the youth. I’d like to have a talk with you. OK?

M: With pleasure. What shall we talk about?

W: OK. You look over 2 meters tall, don’t you?

M: No, I’m 1.98 meters tall. I’m the third tallest in my team.

W: When did you begin to play basketball for the National Team?

M: Two years ago when I was playing in the Gold Cattle Team, I was asked to join the National

Team.

W: Is it very tiring to practice basketball every day?

M: Oh, no. We don’t play all day long. Generally speaking, we practice before breakfast and then

we will have some lessons in the morning. In the afternoon, we will practice playing

basketball.

W: What subjects do you have in the morning?

M: Chinese, English, math, politics and history. Life in here is very interesting.

W: OK. So much for our talking this time. See you later.

Text 9

W: Sir, can I help you at all?

M: I hope so. I’m shopping around for Christmas gifts for the staff of our company.

W: May I ask you who are buying for?

M: CBA company. There are so many choices that I can’t decide.

W: CBA company. We’ve done quite a lot of business with your company in the past, I believe.

M: That’s right. That is why I come to your store first.

W: Excuse me. Mr. Blake has resigned?

M: No. He has been sent to the headquarter. So I take over his position and I am in charge of

choosing gifts this year.

W: I see. Glad to meet you. Would you like to step up here for a close watch? We’ve made great

improvement since we last did business with you.

M: Later on, perhaps. Right now I’d like to have a good look at your booklet.

W: Certainly. Take as many as you need. Come back any time you’re ready.

M: Thanks.

Hello, I am Oasis. This year, I am running for treasurer of our class. Twelfth grade will be our last year at this school. I believe none of us wants to end the year with no fun! As a result, I want to do something different in our class than in other years. Please vote for me because of the following reasons:

First of all, I have great quality to be the treasurer! People think it is easier to take care of your own money than others. And yes, it is true. But I am capable of this challenge, I am organized, responsible, and ... good at math. You can definitely trust me with our class money.

I will keep treasury clear, make sure every income and withdraw beneficial for our class. This is my duty for being a treasurer and I will take it seriously. I will set up a document that shows our class bill monthly. In that way, everyone can ask questions and give advice. You will know how our class donation is doing and how every spending is used, and actually be a part of it.

Lastly, I want you all to trust me that I will do what I said today. Please think more before you vote, and give your twelfth grade year a good treasurer and an Oasis.

Vote for me. Thank you.
