My wife and I were at a crowded grocery store not long ago. It was a weekday evening, cold and wet — and tense. People were carelessly blocking aisles, complaining and cutting one another off with their carts.

Things got worse at the checkout line. The cashier scanned a man's discount card, but he misread the savings on her screen as an additional charge. He decided she was acting deliberately and began to argue.

“She is being spiteful (恶意的)！” he yelled.“This is unbelievable.”

Other customers looked away as the cashier tried to reason with him. She called a manager, who accompanied the man to customer service. Shaken, she moved to the next customer in line.

We've all witnessed uncomfortable scenes like this in public places. The grocery scene was another example of how our trust in others has eroded. But it was also a teachable moment on how we can rebuild our faith — starting with just one person.

Back at the grocery store, my wife and I reached our uneasy cashier. I grabbed a bottle of water from a nearby cooler and handed it to her. “We felt bad about how that man treated you and wanted to buy this for you，”I said. Her face lit up, and we talked as she scanned our items. She told us she had been working that evening through severe foot pain and would be having surgery later that week. We wished her well in her recovery, and she thanked us as we left.

Those are the balancing acts, the moments of responding social and emotional pain with healing, which will add up to restore trust among people. You can start that pattern in someone else's life, even in a place as ordinary as the neighborhood grocery store.

Running may feel like a big task for most of us. But do you know our species has evolved to run better than any other animals on this planet? Cheetahs (猎豹) are the fastest land animals in the world. But do you know that humans can leave them in the dust? At least, in the long run, that's right. When it comes to endurance, we can outrun cheetahs, wolves and even horses. So what makes humans such endurance running superstars? The secret weapon is our sweat. We have 2－4 million sweat glands (腺) all over our body, which means we can run and cool ourselves at the same time. Having no fur is also a huge plus. In contrast, dogs rely on panting (喘息) to cool down, and other animals, like horses and camels, also sweat, but less effectively. As a result, they overheat faster and must slow down sooner.

So, why did humans get to be such great endurance runners, anyway? Some experts believe this became important around 2－3 million years ago, when we started hunting. Because we couldn't chase down a gazelle (瞪羚) like a cheetah, early humans learned hunting.

Studies show running can lower body weight and body fat. And the longer you train, the greater the benefits are. Just one year of training has been shown to reduce body weight by about 71bs, lower body fat by 2.7% and decrease resting heart rate by 2.7%.

It may seem really hard, or even impossible to run a mile or a marathon. But in fact, you were born to go on that run. We all were.

Robots are now being employed not just for dangerous tasks but also as household help and as nursing assistants. As increasing numbers of machines, equipped with the latest artificial intelligence, take on a growing variety of specialized and everyday tasks, the question of how people see them and behave towards them becomes even more urgent.

A team led by professors Sari Nijssen of Radboud University and Markus Paulus, have carried out a study to determine the degree to which people show concern for robots and behave towards them based on moral principles.

According to Sari Nijssen, the study set out to answer the following question:“Under what circumstances would adults be willing to sacrifice robots to save human lives？”The participants were faced with a hypothetical (假设的) moral dilemma: Would they be prepared to put a single person at risk in order to save a group of injured persons? In the situations presented the intended victim was either a human, a humanoid (仿生) robot that had been humanized to various degrees or a robot that was clearly recognizable as a machine.

The study suggested that the more the robot was humanized, the less likely participants were to sacrifice it. Situations that included vivid stories in which the robot was described as a merciful being or as a creature with its own understandings, experiences and thoughts, were more likely to stop the study participants from sacrificing it in the interests of anonymous (无名的) humans.

“This result indicates that our study group attached a certain moral status to the robot，” says Paulus. “One possible suggestion of this finding is that attempts to humanize robots should not go too far. Such efforts could come into conflict with their intended function — to be of help to us.”
