exclusivecountryclub,luxurycars,designerclothing,andhigh-classsocietyfriends.Nomatterhowmuchtheyaccumulated,however,itneverseemedtobeenough.Theywereunabletoerasethedeepfearofscarcitybothhadacquiredinchildhood.Theyneededtolearnthelessonofabundance.Thenthestockmarketcrashedin1987,andAlanandLindalostaconsiderableamountofmoney.Abizarrebutcostlylawsuitdepletedanotherhugeportionoftheirsavings.Onethingledtoanother,andtheyfoundthemselvesinafinancialdisaster.Assetsneededtobesold,andeventuallytheylostthecountryclubmembership,thecars,andthehouse.IttookseveralyearsandmuchhardworkforAlanandLindatolandontheirfeet,andthoughtheynowlivealifefarfromextravagant,theyhavetakenstockoftheirlivesandfeelquiteblessed.Onlynow,astheyassesswhattheyhaveleft--asolid,lovingmarriage,theirhealth,adependableincome,andgoodfriends--dotheyrealizethattrueabundancecomesnotfromamassing,butratherfromappreciating.
Scarcityconsciousnessarisesasaresultofthe"hole-in-the-soulsyndrome."Thisiswhenweattempttofillthegapsinourinnerliveswiththingsfromtheoutsideworld.Butlikepuzzlepieces,youcan'tfitsomethinginwhereitdoesnotnaturallybelong.Noamountofexternalobjects,affection,love,orattentioncaneverfillaninnervoid.Wealreadyhaveenough,soweshouldrevelinourowninteriorabundance.
